Let's take a look at where bracken grows.

Where does bracken grow?

Bracken is born in the Xiangyang block in the shallow mountain area, and is mostly distributed in the sparse coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest. Its edible part is the undeveloped young leaf bud and the tender stem in the upper half. The stem is stout and enlarged, with a stiff and erect petiole, often as high as about 60 cm. In spring, when the tender leaves are still in curl, they are picked for consumption. It is widely distributed in Chinese mainland and Southeast Asia, where it is also popular at the dinner table.

Where is the origin of bracken distributed?

1. Hebei: Chengde bracken is a famous wild vegetable in Hebei Province. Chengde area covers an area of more than 33000 hectares, which is divided into Longhua, Fengning, Pingquan, Kuancheng and other places.

2. Liaoning: bracken is widely distributed in the mountainous areas of Liaoning Province, especially in the eastern mountainous areas. it is exported to Japan and other countries, and the domestic market is also very popular.

3. Inner Mongolia: bracken is distributed in all parts of Inner Mongolia, but the main producing areas are Chifeng City, Xingan and other places, with an annual output of about 200 tons, and the local picking period is in June.

4. Jilin: bracken is distributed in the mountainous areas of Jilin Province, with a large output. It begins to appear on the market around May every year, which is mainly exported to South Korea, and its domestic sales are also very good.

5. Heilongjiang: bracken is distributed in alpine areas at an altitude of 200 to 800 meters above sea level, mostly mixed with weeds, unearthed in mid-May and harvested from late May to early June.

6. Guizhou: there are many pteridophytes in Guizhou. In fact, pteridophytes are the most widely distributed and have the most species in Guizhou. The local picking period of bracken is from mid-March to August.

7. Hunan: bracken is found in Xiangyin, Miluo, Zhang Guying and other mountains. Bracken is picked in spring, and ferns grow up and cannot be eaten after about June.

8. Ningxia: bracken is widely distributed in Guyuan and Yuzhong County, Gansu Province, especially in Zhangxian County, Taihe Mountain and Haas Mountain in Jingyuan County.

What are the common kinds of bracken?

1. Dryopteris Dryopteris: Dryopteris Dryopteris is a special species with tall shape, broad leaves and many long linear sessile pinnae, spreading from the axis at right angles, which makes it stand out in various species of this genus. This species is slightly similar to the European fern and its Asian variety, but the pinnae are up to 20 cm long, long linear, spreading at right angles, and the ultimate lobes are also longer, linear-lanceolate, apical, and more or less crenate on both sides.

2. Eating ferns: the plant of eating ferns is about 1 meter high, the rhizome is long and transverse, the leaves are distal, the leaves are oblong-triangular, the apex is acuminate, the base is broadly cuneate, tripinnate, each other, stalked, slightly upward oblique, oblong-lanceolate, apex long acuminate, with a short tail, the base is nearly flat or heart-shaped, the base pair is not shortened. Distributed in southwestern Guangxi, Hainan, Indo-China Peninsula, Malaysia, Indonesia and other places.

3. European fern: the European fern plant can be up to 1 meter high, and its leaves split into many petals and grow on a smooth black stem. When the plant grows up, the stem becomes very hard and the buds are edible. It is produced all over the country, but it is mainly produced in the Yangtze River basin and north, and is also distributed in subtropical areas. it is also distributed in sunny mountain slopes and sunny places at the edge of the forest, at an altitude of 200,830 meters, and also widely distributed in other tropical and temperate regions of the world.

4. Dryopteris: the plant of Dryopteris przewalskii is up to 2 meters high and the rhizome is horizontal. Leaves papery, dark green, glabrous above, sparsely grayish brown pilose along main veins below. The leaf vein is dense, oblique, visible above, obvious below, leaf axis and feather axis are smooth, small feather axis is nearly smooth, there is a deep longitudinal groove above, glabrous in the groove, straw color. The shape is close to the European fern, specializing in eastern Guangxi (Hexian), born in the sunny part of the hillside.

5. Dryopteris Dryopteris: the plant of Dryopteris Dryopteris is more than 1 meter high, with transverse rhizome, distant leaves, straw color or brown straw color, leaves broad triangular or ovate triangular. Most of them grow in the provinces and regions south of the Yangtze River, producing Taiwan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Xizang, forest clearings in the sunny slopes or valleys. Yibin area of Sichuan is called "rice fern".

6. Yunnan fern: the plant of Yunnan fern is about 1 meter high, the petiole is stout, the upper part is light gramineous, glabrous. Leaf blade ovate-triangular, 4-pinnatifid. Basal pinnae largest, oblong-triangular, apex acuminate, base broadly cuneate, opposite, obliquely spreading, long stalked, ca. 28 cm from upper pair. Three pinnatifid, a small viewing film of about 20 pairs, opposite or subopposite, spreading or oblique. Specializes in western Yunnan (Yingjiang), 1450 meters above sea level.
