Long branches refer to strong branches sprouting from latent buds on perennial old branches. It was originally a professional term for fruit tree planting, but now it is gradually applied to the maintenance of bonsai plants. Most of them are useless branches, but this paper tries to discuss them from advantageous aspects.

The Cause and Expression of Potted Stems

Potted plants have long branches because the normal growth mechanism of plants is broken, changed or weakened. It was more prominent in young trees, old trees, heavy cut trees and damaged trees.

1. Excess nutrients are lacking

The main nutrients required by plants are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. When nitrogen is sufficient, plants can synthesize more protein, promote cell division and growth, rapidly increase plant leaf area and accelerate photosynthesis, so that plants grow vigorously. Phosphorus participates in photosynthesis, respiration, energy storage and transmission, cell division and so on, and can promote the formation and growth of roots. Potassium can obviously improve the absorption and utilization of helium by plants, and quickly transform into protein, which promotes plant reproduction and growth.

2. Wangshu forced to cut off the main branch

According to the modeling method of "cutting trunk and storing branches" of Lingnan bonsai, when the trunk or main branch of tree stump is raised to a certain thickness, it should be cut short, the branches should be cut strongly according to the proportion, and the next branch should be cultivated again. These stumps are in the stage of vigorous growth, and once the stumps are cut off or cut, the balance between branches and roots will be broken. Although the function of roots is temporarily reduced, they are in urgent need of nutrients from leaves through photosynthesis to maintain them. They will quickly grow new strong branches at the closest bud position with the best cortex and vessel to achieve a new balance as soon as possible.

3. Bark damage and conduction interruption

Bark is an important organ for protecting trees from damage and effectively transporting various nutrients and water. Bark damage plus the invasion of bacteria, tree conduction tissue is destroyed or interrupted, it will be in the damaged part below the search for better old bud point, quickly grow new strong branches, in order to quickly restore leaf photosynthesis, to provide nutrients to the roots. In bonsai practice, there are often knife cutting bark to promote bud, girdling bark to promote rooting, which is the application of the principle of destroying plant conduction system.

4, tree aging, tissue aging

Too old stumps are generally not suitable for making bonsai, because its life will not be very long. A small number of excellent varieties, beautiful pile shape of the old pile needs a long period of rejuvenation culture, and to have a superb maintenance technology can be achieved. Stump is too old, its physiological function is seriously degraded, tree body is weak, resistance is reduced, and growth is slow. It is difficult to withstand harsh natural environments such as wind and rain, lightning, high temperature, freezing, etc., weak ability to resist diseases, pests, bacterial invasion, aging of organizational structure, reduced photosynthesis, and loss of branches, roots, and even death once mismanaged.

In the process of balanced growth of old piles, it is difficult to satisfy the growth of all roots and branches due to the degradation of absorption function, and the dominant branches and branches are given priority to supply and grow, which is the main reason for the old piles to wither. When the waterline supply of the dominant branch is destroyed, one or more extra branches grow below the destruction point to sustain photosynthesis. This kind of excessive long branch grows commonly in the middle lower part of partial withered old pile.
