Small earthworms, a great contributor to soil improvement

A long time ago, the director always thought that earthworms were used to loosen the soil. Although it is known that the soil with earthworms is a high-quality planting soil, I do not know why, let alone that there is a good method such as earthworm composting.

When you see the name of earthworm composting, some Taiwanese may misunderstand: is this turning earthworms into compost?

Oh, NoNoNo!

Earthworm composting method is to use kitchen waste to compost, put earthworms at a specific time, let these small animals join our "composting project."

Small earthworms eat food waste compost as heavy as their own body every day, and then the excrement is the best fertilizer in the world.

Do you want to contribute more to home gardening and balcony planting to improve soil quality? Earthworm composting is a great idea.

Earthworms are the most valuable animals on earth.

Please don't underestimate the earthworm. Darwin once praised it as the most valuable animal on earth.

Earthworm excrement (feces) will make the soil fertile, earthworms drill in the soil, will make the soil loose and breathable. Foreign gardening masters advocate earthworm composting, using the characteristics of earthworms to improve overconsumed and polluted soil.

Red earthworm is the best choice for earthworm composting. Red earthworms, also known as Cuban earthworms, can regulate the acidity and alkalinity of the soil, and the nutrients of the remains are very high. Plants planted with this compost grow particularly healthy with few insect pests.

Earthworms have always been known as the cultivators of the earth.

The ventilated composting box mentioned in the previous article on the balcony can also be extended to raise red earthworms. However, this breeding process, ah, is skillful, and let's listen to the director explain it.

Just pour into the kitchen waste, please do not immediately put the earthworms in, because the water content in the box is too high, the acidity is too strong, not suitable for earthworms to survive. The director suggested that the probability of success is very high when the kitchen waste is poured into at least one month (the cold winter temperature can be extended to 2 months) and the red earthworm is put in when it has been gradually fermented into compost soil.

The food waste that red earthworms like to eat.

The red earthworm is the little pet we keep in the composting box. It's a little disgusting... ), it does not require a high temperature, and it can survive even 5 to 35 ℃. But red vermis naturally like dampness, and it is appropriate to have a humidity of 60% to 80%.

Every day, each earthworm eats the same amount of food waste as the weight, and then discharges about half of the earthworm manure, which is considerable enough!

If raised properly, 1 kilogram of red earthworms will breed into 3 kilograms of earthworms in about a year. You have to keep this data in mind. Haha, this is the head of the station's experience.

Red earthworms specialize in eating rotten organic matter. In order to successfully implement earthworm composting, Haide, which provides food waste, is somewhat fastidious.

Earthworm composting method

Food waste requirements

One: desalting, deoiling

Although red earthworms can accept moisture, they are not suitable for soaking in water, so it is best to drain wet kitchen waste first, and it is better to use raw kitchen waste without oil or salt. Taiwan friends might as well rinse the cooked kitchen waste first, drain it, and then collect it together with the raw kitchen waste.

In kitchen waste, peel, bread, bean dregs and rice bran are all favorite foods for earthworms.

Two: non-toxic and preservative-free

Earthworm food is kitchen waste compost, but it is afraid of preservatives and pesticides, so please pay attention to this when stacking kitchen waste.

Some Taiwanese are used to pouring culture soil instead of coconut soil, but please remember to buy soil that does not contain preservatives, otherwise it will affect the health of earthworms.

Three: cut into small pieces

Please cut the kitchen waste to 1cm in advance to decompose it faster, or break it down with a blender and put it in the composting box. This is also a good way.

When dumping a small amount of food waste into a composting box with red earthworms, just roughly smooth it out and don't squeeze it hard, so that the red earthworms can find food more conveniently.

If the long and thick earthworms are raised successfully, the ideal earthworm fertilizer can be obtained more quickly.

The food waste feared by earthworms

You have to know.

A strong acid or alkali environment.

Preservatives, pesticides, toxic substances.

High-salt, high-oil kitchen waste.

Excessive moisture or dryness.

Strong light and poor ventilation.

Earthworm manure is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, carbon, calcium, magnesium and other nutrients. Compared with cow manure after one month of accumulation, earthworm manure surpasses cow manure composting except potassium.

Most importantly, after the red earthworms are put into the composting box, the fungi in the earthworms will decompose the kitchen waste, making the composting box less likely to produce maggots, mildew and smell.

For those of you who like the earthworm composting method in this article, you might as well give it a try. After 2 months of earthworm composting, great organic fertilizer will be made.

Planted on the balcony.
