The nutritional needs of ornamental fish are mainly protein, fat, sugar, vitamins and inorganic salts.

The demand for protein is affected by the type of food protein, the growth and development stage of ornamental fish and other factors, so the optimal content of protein in diet is a very complex problem. The nutritional value of different proteins varies greatly due to the composition of amino acids and the degree of digestibility. Fat is mainly to provide energy, save protein, but also the carrier of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K), and promote the absorption and utilization of these vitamins, therefore, fat must be added in bait processing. Sugars, mainly as energy substances, have the function of saving protein and participate in the composition of fish tissue. The content of vitamins and inorganic salts in the diet is small, but it is essential. Vitamins are a kind of bioactive substances necessary to maintain the normal physiological function of ornamental fish, which play an important role in maintaining the normal growth and development of fish and improving the ability of disease resistance. Most vitamins are the basic components of enzymes and are involved in regulating metabolism in the body. Vitamins generally cannot be synthesized in the body and must be supplied by food. If there is a lack of certain vitamins, it will lead to metabolic disorders, body disorders, growth retardation, and death in serious cases. In order to supplement vitamins, multivitamin preparations can be added to the diet and a certain amount of fresh bait can be fed to meet the vitamin needs of ornamental fish. Among the food components, inorganic salts constitute bones and other cellular tissues, which participate in the regulation of body fluid osmotic pressure and hydrogen ion concentration, and are the components or catalysts of the enzyme system of ornamental fish. Inorganic salt accounts for a large proportion in the body composition of ornamental fish, which is about 21.17%. If there is a lack of some inorganic salts in the diet, the ornamental fish will have metabolic disorders or deficiencies. Therefore, when designing the formula of bait, adding meat and bone meal and mixing inorganic salt can promote the growth of ornamental fish.
