Taxonomic status: Cyprinidae, Cyprinidae, Silver Carp

Morphological features: flat side of the body, narrow abdomen, complete ventral edge. The head is smaller, about 1 ∕ 4 of the body length. The Gill rake is specialized and unites with each other to form a porous spongy membrane. The scale is small, easy to fall off, and the lateral line is complete. The dorsal fin is short and the end of the pectoral fin does not exceed the base of the ventral fin. Dorsal fin iii-7; anal fin iii-12~13; lateral linear scale 108-124. The body is silvery white and the fins are gray.

Ecological habits: pelagic fish, sexually active, can jump out of the water when frightened. It grows fast, and the weight of 2-year-old fish can reach more than 500g. Take phytoplankton as the main bait, but also eat small zooplankton, plant debris and so on. River migratory fishes are sexually mature over 3 years old and lay floating eggs.

Geographical distribution: originated in the Yangtze River system. Introduced into Ningxia in the 1950s, it is one of the leading species of aquaculture in Ningxia.

Economic value: it has high edible value and ecological value of purifying water quality.
