Lively temperament, fast swimming, often looking for food in groups, growing fast. Typical herbivorous fish, artificial culture can eat formula feed. Migratory fishes of rivers and lakes lay floating eggs.

Geographical distribution: originated in the Yangtze River system. It was introduced into Ningxia in the 1950s.

Economic value: it is one of the leading species of aquaculture with high economic value. However, the amount of stocking should be controlled in natural waters to avoid eutrophication.
