Conceptual distinction: here to distinguish from "gas root", gas root is a kind of adventitious root, but the two can not be equated. Aerial roots refer to the adventitious roots that grow on the stems of adult plants, grow above the ground and are exposed to the air. Aerial roots generally do not have the structure of root crown and root hair, and can not absorb nutrients. It generally plays the role of supporting, climbing, breathing and absorbing moisture in the air, so it is also called "breathing root" or "ventilating root".
