Last Updated: 2024/11/05, Peony is a herb, while peony is a deciduous shrub. The stem of peony is herbaceous, while the latter is woody. Their leaves are also different, the former is narrower and the latter is wider. The shape of flowers is also different, and the flowers of the former are smaller. The florescence of Paeonia lactiflora is also different. The florescence of peony is in late spring and early summer, while that of peony is about March.

1. The origin of both

They both belong to Ranunculaceae and belong to the genus Paeonia, so they are bound to have many similarities, and it is even easy to make people confused. In fact, there is no difference between the two plants in ancient times. Later, the words "wood peony" and "grass peony" appeared. After that, "wood peony" became what we now call peony, and "grass peony" is what we now think of as peony. They have been recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica.

2. Main differences

(1) the former is a kind of herbaceous plant with persistent roots and tubers. The latter is a woody plant, specifically deciduous shrubs.

(2) their stems are also different. The stem of the first kind of plant is herbaceous, and in a certain season, after falling leaves, its aboveground part will die. The stem of the second plant is woody. After the leaves fall, the part of the ground can remain immortal.

(3) their leaves are also different. The leaves of the former are relatively narrow, and both sides are dark green. The leaves of the latter are wider, the front is green, and the reverse is slightly yellowish.

(4) their flowers are also different. The flower diameter of the former is about fifteen centimeters, while that of the latter is about twenty centimeters.

(5) their florescence is also different. The former is in late spring and early summer, while the latter is around March, that is, early spring.
