In the process of cultivation, the cracking ball phenomenon often occurs in cabbage, which affects the appearance of cabbage. In addition, cracked cabbage is easy to be infected with bacteria and rot in the process of storage and transportation. The most common cracking is the top and sometimes the side of the cabbage. Most of them are cracked by a single line, and a small part of them are vertical and horizontal cross cracks. The cracking degree is different, the light ones are only several layers of leaves on the outside of cabbage, and the heavy ones are cracking, which can be as deep as shortening the stem.

Cabbage crack ball

Etiology: the main cause of cabbage cracking is that the cells absorb too much water and burst. The water content in cabbage tissue is more than 90%, the cabbage has shallow roots, large leaves, large evaporation, and grows best when the soil moisture is 70% ~ 80%. If the soil moisture is insufficient, the cabbage is small and not compact. Therefore, it is necessary to water regularly to keep the soil moist. However, after cabbage heading, the leaf ball tissue is brittle and tender, and the cell flexibility is small, such as too much soil moisture, it is easy to cause cabbage cracking.

Control method: select fields with flat terrain, convenient drainage and irrigation and fertile soil for planting cabbage. The varieties of cabbage which are not easy to crack ball are selected. Generally, the varieties of pointed cabbage have less crack ball, but there are more round head type and flat head type. Strengthen the management of water and fertilizer, apply sufficient base fertilizer and apply more organic fertilizer to enhance the ability of soil water and fertilizer conservation, so as to buffer the effects of too much, too little and drastic changes in soil moisture on cabbage plants. Cabbage needs a lot of water and needs to be watered many times during the whole growing period. Watering should be appropriate, with the soil moist as the standard, to avoid flooding, and there should be no stagnant water on the ground after watering. The stagnant water in the field was removed in time after rain, especially when the cabbage encountered heavy rain and stagnant water on the ground, it was easy to produce a large number of cracked balls. When harvested at the right time, overripe cabbages are also easy to crack.
