All white asparagus with discoloration, hollow, cracking, deformity, rust spot, bending, aging and bitter taste are called inferior asparagus. The common causes of inferior asparagus are variety, bamboo shoot age, temperature, soil, water and fertilizer management and so on. So how to prevent and cure inferior white asparagus?

Inferior white asparagus

1. Discolored bamboo shoots

The tender stem of white asparagus is all white, but the tips of some asparagus turn purple. The discoloration of tender stem is mainly caused by temperature and light. Tender stems will change color after exposure to the sun, and some tender stems that do not grow on the ground will also change color in the event of high temperature and drought. To prevent discoloration, in addition to selecting excellent varieties, when cultivating ridges, the ridge soil should be slapped fine and solid to avoid soil light leakage. When picking bamboo shoots, avoid the tip of bamboo shoots exposed to the ground, encounter drought, high temperature, it is necessary to timely watering, reduce soil temperature, keep the soil moist.

Second, hollow bamboo shoots

Hollow bamboo shoots are easy to be produced on the thicker tender stems, which can be divided into three types: small hollow, hollow and large hollow. The causes are as follows: (1) low temperature. (2) fertilizing too much. During the period of bamboo shoot picking, too much nitrogen fertilizer was used, which led to the tissue expansion of asparagus tender stem too early and too fast, and the central tissue could not keep up with the growth of the surrounding tissue. (3) the age of bamboo shoots is old. The older the bamboo shoot is, the higher the hollow heart rate is. (4) soil water content. When the temperature is higher, such as less soil moisture, the hollow tender stem increases obviously. (5) Variety difference. Therefore, in order to reduce the hollowness of tender stems and select varieties with high yield, good quality and not easy to hollow, the method of warming bamboo shoots with plastic film mulching and re-application of organic fertilizer can be used during the bamboo shoot harvest period, so as not to apply too much nitrogen fertilizer as far as possible.

Third, crack bamboo shoots

Cracking bamboo shoots are caused by uneven soil water supply during the growth of tender stems, or sudden rainfall or watering during the period of long drought and lack of water. in addition, the lack of phosphorus, potassium fertilizer or too much nitrogen fertilizer is easy to produce cracking bamboo shoots. Control methods: during the bamboo shoot harvest period, we should apply less nitrogen fertilizer, pay attention to the rational application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer; watering should be appropriate, and the soil should be dry and wet to ensure that soil moisture can meet the normal needs of tender stem growth.

Fourth, curved bamboo shoots

The tender stem of asparagus can only bend to one side when it is squeezed by hard soil and can not grow vertically, or the tender stem will be bent by insect bite, mechanical damage and so on. In order to prevent the bending of bamboo shoots, when ridging, the hard soil should be crushed and cultivated, the underground pests should be controlled in time, and the surrounding tender stems should be avoided when picking bamboo shoots.

5. Rusty bamboo shoots

When picking bamboo shoots, the stubble is too high, the stubble is rotten, and it is easy to produce rust spots. Prevention and control methods: in addition to clear the garden completely without stubble, when picking bamboo shoots, the stubble height is 2-3 cm, but also control watering, reduce soil moisture, can prevent tender stem rust.

Bitter bamboo shoots

Asparagus has a slightly bitter taste, but in high temperature, drought, excessive nitrogen fertilizer and lack of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, the tender stem is bitter. The prevention and control methods: selecting superior species, watering reasonably, applying fertilizer scientifically and increasing the sugar content in the tender stem can relatively reduce the bitterness of asparagus.
