The individual weight, slaughtering rate and economic benefit of commercial mutton sheep can be improved by house feeding and fattening with high-quality forage grass 3 months before sale.

Mutton sheep

Prepare before fattening:

The sheep house should be ventilated, drained, daylighting, sheltered from the wind and sun, and close to the pasture and feed warehouse. The feeding density is 0.4-0.5 square meters per mutton sheep, which can restrict the movement of mutton sheep and increase the fattening effect.

Forage, feed mutton sheep fattening basis, during the whole fattening period, each mutton sheep should prepare 2-2.5 kg of hay, or 3-5 kg of ammoniated feed or silage, etc., and concentrate 0.3-0.4 kg per mutton sheep per day.

Mutton is in great demand in winter and spring, and commercial mutton sheep is more suitable for fattening in winter, so fattening mutton sheep is the best in autumn. At this time, the temperature is suitable, and the forage grass and crop straw are rich, which is conducive to the rapid growth and sale of mutton sheep.

Lambs and young sheep should be selected for fattening, followed by obsolete and aged sheep. After the fattening sheep are selected, the sheep need to be dewormed and castrated.

Principles of feeding and management:

The proportion of concentrate to roughage should be appropriate, which can not only provide energy, but also meet the needs of protein, but also maintain the normal activity of sheep stomach and ensure the health of mutton sheep. Seed feed should not be ground too fine, lest dust be inhaled into sheep lungs and affect health. In addition, it is best to add silage to meet the vitamin demand when the concentrate is matched with green hay, or to add multivitamins and trace elements to the mutton sheep feed.

The feeding amount of mutton sheep should be determined according to its feed intake and how much it should be fed. Its feed intake is related to mutton sheep breed, age, sex, physique, feed palatability and moisture. The greater the feed intake of sheep, the higher its daily gain. The daily feed intake of hay, fresh grass and concentrate are 2-2.5 kg, 3-4 kg and 0.3-0.4 kg respectively. Feed concentrate first, then hay or coarse feed, and finally drink water. Forage is added at any time to maintain a strong appetite and increase food intake of mutton sheep, of which protein accounts for about 8% of the sheep diet.

Fattening in autumn should try to reduce the exercise and consumption of mutton sheep so that all the nutrients absorbed by mutton sheep can be used to gain weight. At noon, mutton sheep can be put out to bask in the sun or graze nearby for a short time.
