How to prevent hypoglycemia from general spasm to coma in winter piglets
Piglet hypoglycemia, also known as piglet disease, is caused by low blood sugar content in newborn piglets. The disease is characterized by 7 days of age piglets blood sugar is 2-3% lower than normal pigs of the same age, appear neurological symptoms. Winter and spring season multiple, such as improper treatment, mortality is higher.

1. Causes of disease. (1)Pregnant sows, feeding management is improper, postpartum milk is insufficient or not, resulting in piglet hunger, or colostrum is too thick, milk protein, milk fat content is high, resulting in piglet digestive dysfunction. (2)Sow postpartum disease, such as fever, mastitis, etc., resulting in insufficient lactation, resulting in piglets eat less than enough colostrum or litter piglets more, nipples less, piglets eat less colostrum. (3)Piglets themselves physiological function is not yet mature, glycogen heterogenesis ability is poor, easy to suffer from this disease. (4)Low temperature, cold bad climate stimulation is also the cause of this disease.
2. Clinical symptoms. Piglets within 3 days of age are susceptible to disease. Sick pigs are depressed, weak in limbs, prone to lying and lethargy. Pale skin, low body temperature, cold ears, tail roots, limbs, cyanosis, breast sucking stopped. In severe cases, neurological symptoms, muscle tremors, paroxysmal spasms, involuntary limb movements, and finally slow heartbeat, temperature drop, until coma and death. The cause of this disease has obvious neurological symptoms and is clinically misdiagnosed as pseudorabies, streptococci and other diseases, so it is necessary to distinguish them carefully.
3. Treatment. (1)Give piglet timely sugar supplement, 10% glucose solution (warm)20 ml, piglet abdominal cavity or subcutaneous injection, every 6 hours, for 2~3 days. (2)Piglets oral rehydration salts or oral glucose solution and warm brown sugar water. (3)Injection of hyperglycemic corticosteroids.
4. Summary. The early stage of this disease has a certain effect, once the nerve symptoms appear, the treatment effect is not ideal, therefore, the key to prevent and treat piglet hypoglycemia lies in prevention. Specific measures are as follows: (1) Strengthen the feeding management of pregnant sows, supply high-quality complete feed, especially not lack of feed containing more sugar. (2)Strengthen the postpartum health care of sows, early detection and early treatment of sick sows. (3)Try to let the newborn piglets eat colostrum, such as colostrum too thick, can be artificially squeezed off a little, and then let the piglets eat. Such as fewer nipples, piglet more, artificial lactation can be carried out, adhere to timing, quantitative, prevention and control of piglet hunger. (4)In the cold season, newborn piglets must pay attention to keep warm and avoid cold stimulation. For piglets within 15 days of birth, the house temperature should be 25℃~30℃.
