Calf

First, nursing to achieve the "three precautions":

1. Prevent asphyxiation. If the cow has dystocia, the calf will suffocate due to blockage of mucus and amniotic fluid for a long time in the mother. The degree of asphyxia is mild, the breath is weak and shortness, the time is a little longer, it can be found that the mucous membrane is cyanotic, the mouth and nose are filled with amniotic fluid and mucus, the heartbeat and pulse are fast and weak, and only the cornea has reflex; severe asphyxia, calf respiratory arrest, mucous membrane pallor, whole body flabby, reflexes disappear, can not feel the pulse, can only hear the heartbeat, showing a false death.

When the calf is suffocated, artificial respiration can be carried out to lower the calf's head and raise the hindquarters. One person holds the calf's forelegs and pulls back and forth to expand and oppress the chest alternately, and the other person wipes the nostril and mouth mucus and amniotic fluid with gauze or towels. When doing artificial respiration, be patient until normal breathing occurs. At the same time, it can also be combined with drugs that stimulate the respiratory center.

2. Prevent constipation. This disease means that calves do not defecate within 24 hours after birth, arch back, warped tail for defecation, and so on. In severe cases, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fast and weak pulse. Dry and hard faeces can be found by rectal examination.

Calves after the occurrence of constipation, timely use soapy water enema, so that feces soften in order to discharge. Rectal infusion of 300ml vegetable oil or paraffin oil can also be hot compress, massage the abdomen, or wrap the calf abdomen with large towels to keep warm and relieve abdominal pain.

3. Prevent omphalitis. Omphalitis is an inflammation of bacteria infected at the broken end of the umbilical cord of calves after birth. When the calf navel is palpated, it shows pain, such as cords can be felt subcutaneously in the center and root of the umbilical cord, and foul-smelling thick pus flows out. In severe cases, swelling often affects the surrounding abdomen, calves are depressed, loss of appetite, elevated body temperature, accelerated breathing and pulse, local warming of umbilical cord, and so on.

Prevention and treatment methods: if the tissue around the umbilical hole is inflamed, the umbilical part is first sheared and disinfected, and then penicillin procaine injection is injected subcutaneously around the umbilical hole, and locally coated with pine distillate and 5% iodine. If there is abscess and necrosis, should discharge pus, eliminate necrotic tissue, after cleaning with disinfectant, sprinkle with iodoform sulfonamide powder or furacilin powder and other antibacterial anti-inflammatory drugs, and bandage the local.

Second, the management to achieve the "five no":

1. Don't ignore disinfection. Calves have weak resistance and ignoring disinfection will provide opportunities for germs. Therefore, after the calf is born, disinfect the floor, wall, railing, trough and so on with Gou sex sodium and lime water. Once a month in winter and 2-3 times a month in summer. If infectious diseases are found, the environment and appliances that the disease and dead cattle have come into contact with should be thoroughly disinfected.

2. Don't drink enough water. After calves are born, cow milk can not meet the normal metabolic needs of calves. Therefore, after the calf is born, the cow should be provided with sufficient clean water. Cows should be provided with adequate drinking water even during lactation.

3. Don't make the fence unclean. Clean the fence regularly and brush the cattle once or twice a day to ensure that the calves are not contaminated by sewage and feces and reduce the incidence of diseases.

4. Don't let it be licked. After each feeding, the calf should wipe its mouth and nose clean so as not to lick its nose and cause licking habit. For calves that have developed licking, you can put a small plank in front of the bridge of the nose to correct it.

5. Don't restrict exercise. Calves are in the period of growth and development, and increasing the amount of exercise can enhance the physique of calves. Don't restrict the movement of calves for fear of running around.
