Itching and dryness of bovine eyes can lead to blindness. It is the right time to prevent and cure bovine ophthalmosis in spring.
Bovine eye disease is caused by sucking nematodes parasitic under the bovine conjunctival sac and nictitating membrane (the third face). It can also be caused if parasitic in the lacrimal duct. Bovine eye disease can make bovine conjunctiva and cornea inflamed, due to exudation of mucus or secretions, erosion, itching and dry eyes, burning, shyness, fear of light, if there is no timely treatment, often lead to cattle blindness.
Cattle
Cattle of all ages and breeds can be infected, and young calves are the most common. Generally grazing cattle are more susceptible to infection than house-fed cattle. This is related to the prevalence of bovine eye disease and the seasonality of cattle activities. most cattle begin to develop the disease in May and June, and it is the most severe in August and September, light in winter and severe in summer. The intermediate host of bovine eye worms is houseflies. Mature females give birth to viviparous larvae that can move in bovine eye secretions. For example, when flies lick bovine eye secretions, they can be swallowed by flies and develop into larvae in flies. When the fly sucks the bovine eye secretion again, the larva is excreted from the fly snout into the bovine eye, and after about 20 days, it develops into an adult in the bovine eye, thus infecting the cow with bovine eye disease. The female overwintering in bovine eyes was the main source of bovine eye disease in the following spring. Therefore, spring is a good time to prevent and cure bovine eye disease.
Symptoms: cattle suffer from ophthalmosis, conjunctival flushing, congestion and swelling, cattle are afraid of shyness, tears, aggravation of conjunctivitis, serous and purulent secretions from the eyes, eyelid swelling, finally corneal turbidity, circular ulcers, serious parasitism, blindness, serious harm. Affected cattle affect eating grass, loss of appetite, irritability, constantly shaking their heads, decreased milk production, and great economic losses.
Diagnosis: open the cow's eye and find that the milky white worm with a length of about 10-20 mm is active, and the worm sometimes swims to the surface of the eyeball, which is easier to find. If you can use cow tears as smears and detect larvae under a microscope, you can make a better diagnosis.
In winter and spring, the female bovine eye worm overwinters in the cow eye. Making use of this feature, grasping 12-3 months, timely treatment and deworming in epidemic areas can kill females and effectively block the reproduction of bovine eye worms. To eliminate bovine eye worms, there are the following:
Catch and get rid of insects: catch bovine eye worms with tweezers. Methods: gently press the inner corner of the eye with fingers, and then use sterilized tweezers to lift the nictitating membrane of bovine eyes. If milky nematodes are found, they can be caught quickly.
Solution flushing method: 1 ∶ 2.000 fold iodine solution was injected under the nictitating membrane with a syringe with a rubber head, and 50-75ml was injected into each eye. You can also use 1% trichlorfon water, each eye is injected with 3-4ml, or 2% Murray 3% boric acid water. Methods: every other week, rinse once, rinse 2mi for 3 times, the worm can be washed away.
Eye insecticidal method: 5% silver solution is dropped into the conjunctival sac of bovine eyes, three or four drops in each eye and two or three drops in calves, once in the morning and evening, which can effectively kill the insect.
