Citric acid was added to the diet mainly composed of plant protein before the weight of piglets reached 30 kg, which could effectively improve the digestibility of feed and the production performance of piglets. Most experiments proved that adding 1%~2% citric acid in diet had good effects on preventing diarrhea, promoting piglet growth and improving feed conversion rate.

Lower gastrointestinal pH and reduce diarrhea incidence in piglets

Citric acid can reduce the pH value of diet, improve the acidity and digestive enzyme activity of gastrointestinal tract, promote the reproduction of lactic acid bacteria, inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus. Adding 0.7% and 1% citric acid to the diet of 42-day-old pigs decreased the pH of stomach contents from 4.5 to 4.2 and 3.5 respectively, and significantly reduced the number of Escherichia coli in stomach, colon and rectum. At the same time, lactic acid bacteria and yeast grow in large numbers, which can effectively prevent digestive disorders and diarrhea caused by bacterial infection.

Improve diet palatability and promote piglet growth

It was proved that adding 1%~2% citric acid to diet could increase feed intake of piglets by 5.2%~19.8%, daily gain by 9%~38.67%, feed conversion rate by 11%~15%, and citric acid was better than other organic acids.

Regulate gastric emptying speed and promote digestion and absorption of nutrients

After adding 1% citric acid to piglet diet, pH value in stomach and intestinal tract decreases, acid chyme enters small intestine, secretes gastrostatin through chemical stimulation to small intestine wall, slows down gastric emptying speed and food movement speed in intestinal tract, prolongs food retention time in stomach, makes food fully mixed with saliva, gastric juice and other digestive fluids, and is beneficial to digestion and absorption of nutrients in food. At the same time, citric acid can form chelates with Ca, Cu, Fe, P, Zn, Mg, etc., which are easy to be absorbed and utilized and have high biological value, so as to promote their absorption and retention. The main reason is that some mineral elements are easy to form insoluble and difficult to absorb salts in the alkaline gastrointestinal tract, while citric acid can reduce the pH value of the intestinal tract and promote the absorption and utilization of minerals in the feed by fat.

Direct use as a dietary ingredient to promote piglet metabolism

Citric acid is an important component in the metabolism of grain, protein and fat. It is an intermediate product of tricarboxylic acid cycle, and the ATP released can play a role as a dietary component. Citric acid supplementation in diet can reduce the loss caused by glycogen metabolism and lipid hydrolysis, promote the activity of electron transfer system and isocitrate dehydrogenase when ATP is synthesized in vivo, play an important role in ATP formation and biomass accumulation, thus promoting the metabolism of piglets and enhancing the utilization rate of energy and amino acids in piglets.

Prevent oxidation of feed and relieve weaning stress of piglets

Citric acid is a synergist of feed antioxidants. Its mechanism of action is to block metal ions in feed, so that it can not play a catalytic oxidation reaction. At the same time, due to the low feed intake of early weaned piglets, the low utilization rate of carbohydrate and protein, the high incidence of diarrhea and mortality, citric acid in the feed can promote the secretion of gastric juice and digestive enzymes, effectively overcome the weaning stress of piglets.
