Summer is rich in a variety of fruits, bananas, pineapples successively reported price drop. Papaya was also affected, prices began to fall in early June, and even dropped to 7 or 8 yuan per kilogram, lower than the monitoring price of 14.5 yuan. According to Beinong auction market prices, yesterday has rebounded to 14 yuan. Zeng Yaping, director of the promotion unit of the Yunlin County Farmers 'Association, said that the weather in the first half of the year was fine, but recently it rained, and papaya was prone to water damage. In addition, the high substitution of fruits caused prices to fall.

However, after growing papaya for more than 30 years, Li Hsieh-chang, general manager of the Changzhi Jiannong Green Fruit Production Cooperative in Pingtung County, believes that papaya can be harvested all year round, unlike pineapple, which ends when the season is over, and prices will rise later. Slow sales are only temporary.

From the figures to see papaya: from the papaya price change table can be found, papaya planting area has not increased, the price changes in the past stable, this year's price is significantly lower than last year, but farmers judge it as normal rise and fall, not a large collapse.

Market fruit more, papaya intolerant storage prices depressed

The auction price of papaya in Beinong the day before yesterday was 14 yuan per kilogram, down nearly 70% from 38.3 yuan per kilogram in the same period last year. However, prices rose in the previous two years due to typhoons; this year, the weather was smooth and various crops were abundant, which caused prices to fall sharply.

"The price of papaya was indeed not very good a while ago." Zeng Yaping pointed out that the plantation area of papaya in the forest is about 200 hectares, accounting for one tenth of the whole Taiwan. In the first half of the year, the weather was good for mass production, but it had been raining recently, causing serious water damage to papaya. The market acceptance was not high, and of course the price fell.

Zeng further said that recently a variety of fruits abound, consumers choose more, papaya and storage resistance, which are leading to price decline factors. It is true that some farmers abandon their harvests because they cannot meet the cost. Ever observed, since the end of May, papaya prices have been depressed all the way,"prices have fallen in the past, but not for so long."

Shi Xiuyuan, director of the supply and marketing department of the Kaohsiung Six Turtle Farmers Association, also said that the planting area of six turtles is about 60 hectares and has been almost harvested. "The problem now is that the market price can't be pulled up, and there are many alternative fruits." At present, many fruits are abundant and the prices are low. Consumers naturally do not want to buy papaya at high prices, but there is no slow sales situation.

Domestic market demand is small, export is another important sales channel, Tseng Ya-ping stressed that "in the face of production subsidies, it is better to work hard to find sales channels." The Linnei Farmers Association had tried to export before, but because of the high cost of export, quarantine problems, and storage intolerance. In addition, farmers thought it would be better to sell on the market, and prices would rise in winter, so they gradually stopped exporting.

"Taiwan's market is small, and there is no way to export it. As long as the weather in Taiwan is favorable, every fruit will be unsalable." Li Hsieh-chang, who has been exporting for decades, says that the export volume is not going out, and less than 1% of Taiwan's papaya exports are exported.

Li stresses that in the past they mainly focused on the mainland market, but in recent years Southeast Asian countries have sprung up, using farm farming methods for cultivation and management, and wages and land are cheap."Taiwan has no advantage, so how can it compare? We can't always be quality. They'll catch up with us one day."

Li says that export sales are all up to the farmers themselves to negotiate and find a way out."The government should encourage and reward export subsidies, so that everyone will work harder to export, so that supply and demand can balance."

Meinung Farmers Association: Export to Singapore Begins This Year

Chung Ching-hui, director-general of the Meinung Farmers Association in Kaohsiung City, said that Meinung papaya planting area is about 120 hectares. Since the end of May, papaya prices have fallen and they have begun to export to Singapore. The Meinung Farmers Association buys from farmers at $27.5 to $30 per kilogram and has exported about 50 metric tons so far. "This number isn't a lot, but just a little bit can stabilize the price."

As for papaya, Chung says that it takes five to seven days to export to Singapore, and the farmers 'association works with farmers who have a history of production and marketing to ensure a certain quality. Add in the requirement for farmers to harvest papayas that are less ripe, and you can store them longer. At present, containers have been shipped to Singapore one after another, and the response is also good.

But Chung also says that if they want to export to countries farther afield, they must develop new varieties to overcome the problem of storage intolerance."If preservation technology can't overcome it, they can't export."
