Bullfrog is named because of its loud sound and bright resemblance to the cry of a cow. it is an abnormal developing animal. The growth process is divided into four stages: fertilized eggs, tadpoles, young frogs and adult frogs. Let's take a detailed look at the growth process of bullfrogs.

Bullfrog fertilized egg

When the water temperature rises above 18 ℃, the male frogs begin to be in estrus. Frogs weighing 300 to 500 grams lay eggs ranging from 10, 000 to 50, 000, and the number of eggs per gram of body weight varies from 15 to 109.

Bullfrogs live in lakes, ditch ports, ponds and other water environment and nearby land, and usually like to live in ditches and ponds. If there are floating plants on the surface of the water, then lie on the water plants, only with the head out of the water, and dive into the water in the event of a disturbance. Bullfrogs have the characteristics of living in groups, often a few or dozens of living together in one place, and do not move casually after adapting to the environment.

Bullfrog tadpole

The suitable water temperature for the growth of tadpoles is 20 ℃ ~ 30 ℃. In this temperature range, the metamorphosis time of tadpoles is about 85 days. Due to the difference of air temperature and water temperature in different regions, the growth rate and metamorphosis time of tadpoles are also different. At the same site, the metamorphosis speed of tadpoles is also closely related to the water temperature, and low temperature is the main factor affecting the growth and metamorphosis of tadpoles.

Bullfrog juvenile frog

Young frogs feed on earthworms, crustacean shrimp, snails, clams, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and the viscera of mammals.

Bullfrog adult frog

The growth of adult frogs in the adult stage is much faster than that in the tadpole stage. after the bullfrog is metamorphosed from tadpoles to frogs, the growth of bullfrogs is mainly the increase of body weight, and the increase of body length is much slower. Bullfrog grows very fast and can gain about 50g per month on average. After raising young frogs for 5 months, the commercial frogs can grow to about 250g for sale.

After the adult frog gonad matures, the growth slows down obviously, because part of the digested and absorbed nutrients are supplied to the germ cell growth. At this time, most of the bullfrogs are 2 years old and their body weight is more than 350g.

The growth of adult frogs is restricted by temperature and food. when the water temperature is lower than 10 ℃ or higher than 34 ℃, bullfrogs basically do not eat. The water temperature is in the optimum growth stage of 23 ℃ ~ 28 ℃. If the food is not enough, the growth of bullfrog slows down. When the temperature drops below 10 ℃ in winter, most bullfrogs stop growing dormant, but if they are transferred to artificial greenhouse or plastic greenhouse, the air temperature and water temperature are 20 ℃ ~ 30 ℃, the bullfrog resumes feeding and grows rapidly, and the average monthly weight gain is more than 30g without hibernation.
