Peony parrot is also known as lover parrot, lovebird, etc., there are 9 species in China, which are more precious artificial breeding birds. the common species are glazed waist peony parrot, yellow-collar black peony parrot, golden peony parrot, cherry brother peony parrot and blue peony parrot. Let's take a look at the breeding methods of peony parrot.

Peony parrot breeding preparation

Peony parrots can breed 3 to 5 nests a year, with autumn and winter being the best. Nests should be torn down in July and August to stop breeding. The preparatory work for reproduction will begin in autumn. The nest box is made of plywood. The specification is 20cm * 20cm * 30cm, which is divided into upper and lower layers or left and right rooms. There is a hole in and out of the partition in the middle, with a diameter of 7cm. A circular hole with a diameter of 6 cm on the upper side will disinfect and dry the prepared nest box with 0.06% washing solution or alkaline water in advance, and the bottom of the nest will be covered with twigs, bark, sawdust or fine shavings, and placed in a darker place at the top of the cage.

Feed preparation of peony parrot

Peony parrots should be provided with adequate nutrition during breeding, increasing the proportion of eggs in rice to 30%. Increase the proportion of oil seeds, can be fed fresh millet, fresh corn, but also appropriately increase the proportion of additives, management should reduce the number of cleaning cages, once every two weeks, do not move the birdcage at will, try to keep the environment quiet, do not easily peep at parents and nestlings. The egg test began one week later, and it was found that the eggshell fell outside the nest to prove that the chicks had emerged. In order to ensure that they would reproduce again next year and the offspring would be more robust, the nest box should be removed after the breeding period, washed and preserved, and the proportion of oilseeds in feed and eggs in rice should be reduced.

Matching method of peony parrot

Peony parrots can be paired when they reach sexual maturity at the age of 8 ~ 10 months. If both females and males are in estrus, they can pair up in 3 days, which usually takes about 10 days. Soon the parent bird begins to build the nest, often the female lays grass in the nest and the male holds the grass outside, and sometimes the male even feeds the female some food. After mating at 9 o'clock, 12:00 or 15:00, the female begins to lay eggs about a week later, laying 3-4 eggs per litter for the first time and 4-7 eggs per litter for females over 1 year old. The incubation period of peony parrots is generally 20-23 days, and the females are mainly responsible for feeding the males and the males spend the night in the nest box.

Peony parrot nestling rearing

The newborn nestling of the peony parrot has no fluff and relies on the body of the female to keep warm. After the male feeds outside the nest box, the male enters the nest and feeds the female. The time for the female to feed the nestling is about 30 days, but it will take 10 days until the nestling can peck on its own. The chicks within 10 to 12 days after hatching are very difficult to be artificially fed, and only after 12 days can the chicks be artificially fed. Millet flour, cooked egg yolk, green vegetable leaves and so on can be selected for artificial feeding. Boil the feed into seven or eight ripeness, add additives, grind it into a paste, knead it into a small ball, rub it into the bird's mouth, and feed the crop bulging for about 6 times a day.

Conclusion: during the breeding period of peony parrots, more attention should be paid to observation, such as whether the relationship between male and female parent birds is mating, nesting behavior, hatching love 7 brothers, feeding chicks and whether chicks can eat by themselves, etc., timely record and grasp first-hand information. Only by constantly summing up experience can healthy birds be bred.
