Bovine rumen swelling, also known as flatulence, is a disease caused by excessive intake of forage grass that is easy to ferment. According to the nature of the gas, the disease is divided into foam and non-foam, and according to the causes of the disease, it is divided into primary and secondary. Let's take a look at the prevention and treatment of bovine rumen expansion.

Symptoms of rumen swelling in cattle

Shortly after the cattle were fed on fermentable forage, the left side expanded sharply, and the height of the expansion could exceed that of the spine. The sick cow showed pain and restlessness, looked back to his abdomen, and raised his hind legs and kicked him from time to time. Appetite, ruminating and belching stop completely, and it is difficult to breathe. In serious cases, open mouth, tongue breathing, rapid heartbeat breathing, conjunctival congestion, dark mouth color, walking swaying, standing unstable, once fell to the ground, dyspnea is more serious, if not emergency rescue, sick cattle can be asphyxiated to death due to dyspnea and hypoxia.

Etiology of rumen swelling in cattle

1. Feed a large number of young and juicy grass. It is generally believed that legumes, such as fresh alfalfa, sweet clover, Artemisia mandshurica, pea vines and so on.

2. Feed on forage after rain or frost.

3. Rotten fermented silage and moldy hay.

4. Secondary diseases such as esophageal obstruction, forestomach relaxation, traumatic reticular gastritis and peritonitis.

Prevention of Rumen swelling in cattle

1. When changing from house feeding to grazing, feed some hay or roughage first.

2. Properly control the grazing time in the areas where the young grass is lush and on the frost-soaked grassland.

3. Strictly prevent cattle from overfeeding or gluttonous young, juicy bean forage, etc.

Treatment of bovine rumen swelling

The main results are as follows: 1. There are two methods to remove the gas in bovine rumen. One is to insert the rumen catheter into the rumen, and then twitch the catheter back and forth to induce the excretion of gas in the stomach, and the other is to carry out rumen puncture, that is, at the highest point of the expansion part of the left cranium, it is quickly punctured with a cannula needle after disinfection with iodine tincture and deflated slowly.

2. Stop the rumen contents from continuing to ferment and produce gas. For cattle with mild expansion, they can take fermentation agents, such as 1520 grams of fish stone fat or 30 milliliters of turpentine. For foamy rumen distension, 250 ml of Sichuan bean oil, peanut oil and cottonseed oil can be given to sick cattle, which has a good antifoaming effect, and can also be given to cattle defoamers, such as polymerized methyl silicone oil or anti-swelling tablets.

3. Excluding rumen fermentation contents, diseased cattle can be infused with laxatives, such as sodium sulfate 400kg 500g and castor oil 800ml 1000ml.
