Born in paddy fields, ponds or other still waters, often mixed with purple duckweed to form a floating community covered with water surface, because this species propagates fast, as Li Shizhen said: "one leaf is born in the number of leaves", usually occupies an absolute dominance in the community.

Duckweed propagates with seeds and ramets. After harvesting and sowing mature seeds, the seeds are wrapped in yellow mud into small clumps, each with 2-3 seeds and thrown into the cultivated water. Ramet propagation is carried out in spring and summer, and some of the mother plants are harvested and scattered into the water surface of cultivation.
