Purple dew grass, also known as purple duck toe grass, purple leaf grass, etc., is a perennial herb of the family Caryophyllaceae, native to tropical America, and is introduced and cultivated in China, with plant shape, buds and inflorescences suitable for ornamental use. It is better to be used in flower beds and on both sides of the road. It can also be potted for indoor decoration or for hanging cultivation. Let's take a look at the breeding methods of purple dew grass.

Growth habits of Tradescantia frutescens

Tradescantia prefers warm and humid semi-shady environment, cold-resistant, the most suitable temperature is between 15-25 ℃, the requirement for soil is not high, it can grow normally in sandy soil and loam, avoid stagnant water in soil, grow well in neutral or alkaline soil, and can survive winter in open field after domestication. If the overwintering is covered with plastic film, the flowering time can be advanced to mid-late April. Root tillers and axillary buds can sprout new branches many times in the growing season, and flower buds can be formed at the top of each branch.

Propagation methods of Tradescantia

1. Ramet: the ramet propagation of Tradescantia is generally carried out before germination in early spring, because the temperature is not high in early spring, the transpiration of the plant is small, and the incision is not easy to rot. Therefore, when propagating, the plants with exuberant growth and good shape can be taken as the mother plant, and the root soil can be removed after being dug out, and the cluster roots and tillers can be cut open with a knife, with 2-3 buds on each piece.

2. Cutting: there is no specific requirement for the cutting time of Tradescantia, the cutting time of the hotbed can be carried out in all periods of the year, the cutting time of the cold bed can be carried out except the winter dormancy period, and the most suitable time is the rainy season. After cutting, attention should be paid to water control to ensure adequate watering and soil moisture in the cutting bed. After 4 days, watering can be reduced properly, the soil surface can not be dry, and rooting can be promoted. After half a month, most of the plants have taken root.

Culture method of Tradescantia

1. Temperature: the optimum growth temperature of Tradescantia is 18: 30 ℃. Avoid cold frost. The overwintering temperature needs to be kept above 10 ℃. If the temperature drops below 4 ℃ in winter, it will go into dormancy. If the ambient temperature is close to 0 ℃, it will die of frostbite.

2. Lighting: Tradescantia is afraid of strong light, so it needs to be preserved in semi-shade or shaded by 70%. Indoor maintenance should be placed in a brightly lit place as far as possible, and moved to outdoor semi-shaded or shaded for a month every one or two months. to accumulate nutrients and restore growth.

3. Fertilizer and water: Tradescantia requires more fertilizer and water, but is most afraid of random fertilization, concentrated fertilizer and partial application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. It is required to follow the fertilization (water) principle of "frequent application of light fertilizer, less and more times, and complete nutrition". Compound fertilizer can be applied once every two weeks.

4. Pruning: in order to keep the plant shape graceful and prolong the flowering period in autumn, the old stem should be renewed to promote the growth of new tiller buds. At the same time, the timely removal of failed flowers and withered branches and leaves can promote the development of new flowers and leaves.
