Summer daffodils, also known as deer onions, deciduous flower beds, etc., are perennial herbaceous ornamental plants of the family Amaryllidaceae. The flowers are dignified and tidy, the color is light and elegant, and the fragrance is quiet. It is suitable to plant the grass edge of the forest in the rock garden or configure the mixed flower border of perennials. The funnel-shaped flowers of reddish purple, fresh and noble, should be used as cut flowers. Let's take a look at the breeding methods of summer daffodils.

Morphological characteristics

Perennial herb of summer daffodils having linear dark green leaves with a pink-green belt in the middle. Solitary branch apical, leathery bulb globose. Scape more than 60 cm tall, terminal umbel, with 4 to 8 flowers, pollen red, snow cyan or water red halo, slightly fragrant. There are varieties with darker colors.

Growth habit

Summer daffodils are native to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, and are distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui. Cold-resistant, like shady and wet environment, but also resistant to sun exposure and drought. It has strong adaptability to soil, and the fertile and loose sandy loam soil is the best. There are two dormancy in summer and winter above ground.

Reproduction method

Summer daffodils are commonly used for bulb reproduction, after flowering in autumn or when the leaves have just withered in early spring, do not hurt the root system when dividing the bulb, so as not to affect the flowering of the year. Generally, the ball is scored once in 4-5 years. It can also be sowed and propagated, and the seeds are stored in a basin after maturity in autumn, and the young roots germinate in the next spring and then transplant, but the seedlings need to be cultivated for 3 to 4 years before they can blossom.

Culture method

The soil of summer daffodils is required to turn deeply, apply sufficient basic fertilizer, plant depth 8-10 cm, and water once after planting. From May to June, the lower part of the ground gradually withered into the dormant period and reduced watering. From August to September, the soil should be kept moist and fertilized once. In the middle of September, the plant withered and entered the winter dormancy period, and the bulbs overwintered in the open field. Summer daffodils sometimes suffer from anthracnose, which can be sprayed with 500 times of carbendazim wettable powder every 15 days.
