Cedar is an evergreen tree of the genus cedar of the pine family. It is called "the five largest garden trees in the world" with Golden Pine, Cedar, World Master and Japanese Golden Pine. It has been introduced in China since 1920, and now it is cultivated in major cities in the Yangtze River valley. Nanjing is the largest cedar producing area in China, accounting for about 60% of the national production. Let's take a look at whether the cedar has any fruit.

Does the cedar have any fruit?

Cedar has fruit. The cone of cedar is light green before maturity, slightly powdery, reddish brown when ripe, ovoid or broadly oval, 7 cm long, 5 cm in diameter, obtuse tip and short pedicel. Middle species scale fan-shaped obtriangular, 2.5 cm long, 4 cm wide, upper broadly round, margin intrinsically curved, middle cuneate, lower auriculate, base claw-shaped, dorsal scales densely tomentose, bract scales short. The seeds are subtriangular, the wings are broad, longer than the seeds, and the seeds are 2.2-3.7 cm long.

The result condition of Cedar

The results of cedar generally have three conditions, one is that the tree is more than 30 years old, and it is male and female, and the third is that it must have certain climatic conditions such as temperature and humidity. However, cedar with these three conditions may not be able to bear cones, because most cedars are dioecious, male flowers bloom about ten days earlier than female flowers, and the two flowers "do not meet", resulting in a very low probability of natural pollination. Flowering and fruiting is extremely rare in the north of the Yangtze River in China.

Growth environment of cedar

Cedar grows vigorously on acid soil with mild and cool climate, deep soil layer and good drainage, which requires mild and cool climate and deep and well-drained soil in the upper layer, like plenty of sunshine, but also quietly resistant to shade, acid soil and micro-alkali, 1300 to 3300 meters above sea level. Northern warm temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest, southern warm deciduous broad-leaved forest, middle subtropical evergreen, deciduous broad-leaved forest and evergreen broad-leaved mixed forest. The warm temperate zone with annual precipitation of 600 to 1000 milliliters to the subtropical climate grows best in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China.
