White bark pine is an endemic tree species in China, which is light-loving and resistant to barren soil and dry and cold climate. it grows well on calcareous soil and loess with warm and cool climate, deep soil layer, fat calcareous soil and loess, and has high cultivation value. propagation methods include sowing propagation, cutting propagation, grafting propagation and so on.

Sowing and propagation of Pinus elliottii

The sandy loam soil with good drainage, flat terrain and deep soil layer should be selected for the sowing and breeding of Pinus elliottii. Sowing immediately after thawing in early spring can reduce pine seedling blight. For fear of waterlogging, we should sow seeds in a high bed and pour enough bottom water before sowing. With about 1 kilogram of seeds for every 10 square meters, 1000 to 2000 seedlings can be produced. After sowing, cover soil 1 to 1.5 cm, covered with plastic film, can improve the germination rate. After the seedlings come out, gradually increase the ventilation time, so that all the film is removed. After sowing, the seedlings are unearthed with shells and fall off on their own in about 20 days. During this period of time, bird damage should be prevented. In the seedling stage, a shed should be built to cover the shade to prevent sunburn, and the soil should be buried to prevent the cold before entering winter. The main root of the seedling is long and the lateral root is rare, so the lateral root should be hurt less when transplanting, otherwise it is easy to die.

Cutting Propagation of Pinus elliottii

The rooting of tender cuttings of Pinus elliottii needs not only suitable water, but also suitable oxygen, so the soil insertion should have good water retention and ventilation, and vermiculite, quartz sand, river sand and peat are generally used to insert soil. Because cuttings need oxygen for rooting, the shallower the better, generally 0.5-4cm, as long as the cuttings are not shallower in indoor cuttings. The length of cuttings is generally more than 4 cm, and there should be 2-4 internodes in this range. Soaking with indoleacetic acid (0.005%-0.01%) solution for 24 hours can improve the rooting rate of cuttings.

Grafting propagation of Pinus elliottii

If Pinus elliottii is propagated by twig grafting, the shoots should be grafted on the older stock of Pinus tabulaeformis, and the general survival rate of 3-to 4-year-old Pinus tabulaeformis rootstock can reach 85% to 95%, with strong affinity and fast growth. The scion should choose the new shoot with strong growth, and its thickness should be 0.5 cm. Before grafting, Pinus tabulaeformis is watered once, so that the water is sufficient, which is beneficial to the formation of callus. The winter pick-up should be carried out in the greenhouse, and the temperature in the greenhouse should be kept above 0 ℃. When the temperature is lower than 0 ℃, the wound heals slowly and the survival rate is low. It can be carried out from November in winter to February of the following year. It can survive after one month, and the survival rate can reach more than 75%.
