Lotus is one of the top ten famous flowers in China, belonging to perennial aquatic herbs of Nymphaeaceae. It has been a precious aquatic flower in palace gardens and private gardens since ancient times. It blooms from late June to September. With the development of modern science and technology, we can also use light control technology to change the flowering period of lotus. Let's take a look at when the lotus will bloom.

When does the lotus bloom?

In general, the lotus blossoms in the midsummer season, and some lotus flowers bloom at the beginning of June. The flowering period is from June to September, and the flower colors are white, pink, crimson, lavender, yellow or intermediate colors. Of course, due to climate change in recent years, the flowering period will also change. The eight lotus flowers in China are Xindu Gui Lake, Hubei Honghu Lake, Hangzhou West Lake, Wuhan East Lake, Yueyang Lotus Lake, Shandong Weishan Lake, Jinan Daming Lake and Nanjing Xuanwu Lake.

The flowering process of lotus

Lotus blooming begins at about 3:00 in the morning. At first, the outer petals are gradually relaxed, and the inner petals at the top of the bud are loosened. By about 5:30 in the morning, the orifice expanded to 2.5-3.5, did not close until about 9:00 in the morning, and the buds completely closed after 15:O0 in the afternoon. Flowering in the middle of the day is also affected by the change of air temperature. a few flowers begin to bloom when the temperature rises to 21 ℃ after 8: 00 in the morning, and increases gradually when the temperature rises to 24-26 ℃. When the temperature rises to the optimum temperature of 28-30 ℃, the flowering peak of the day appears.

Potted lotus does not blossom

1, variety difference: edible lotus root and wild lotus originally bloom less, even do not blossom, rhizome spread ability is strong, require large expansion space, potted plants certainly do not show buds, do not blossom. Most of the seed lotus roots purchased from the vegetable market or roadside belong to edible lotus root. The edible lotus root is enlarged, straight and crisp, with tall leaves and uniform leaf color. The lotus root of potted lotus is in the shape of meniscus, the lotus root body is small, the taste is astringent, the plant leaf is small, the growth is weak, and the leaf color and leaf shape of different varieties are different. The flowering period is different with different varieties of potted lotus.

2. Lack of light: Lotus is a sunny plant, with poor ventilation and lack of light, or when it enters the flower bud differentiation period with continuous rain for more than a week, the leaves can not provide nutrients for reproductive development for the plant through photosynthesis.

3. The pot is too small: large and medium-sized varieties are planted in smaller containers or flowerpots with large mouth and tip bottom, the rhizome expands in a small space, enters the bud stage, the rhizome is crowded, and there is no space for bud growth.

4. Low temperature: in the stage of flower bud differentiation of lotus, the flower bud could not differentiate normally when the temperature was lower than 28 ℃ at noon in daytime and lower than 18 ℃ at night.

5. Improper fertilization: too much fertilizer in basin soil, too early fertilization and too much nitrogen fertilizer will cause plant growth, vegetative growth, reproductive growth weakening, only long leaves but no buds.

6. Excessive density: there are two cases of excessive density. One is that the distance between pots is small, the number of pots per unit area is more, the leaves shade each other, and the ventilation is not good, which is not conducive to the production of buds. Second, the petiole is dense in the basin, two kinds of lotus root or one kind of lotus root planted in one pot, in addition to the top bud, the other lotus roots and lateral buds also develop well, which is equivalent to two or three kinds of lotus root, resulting in high density in the basin, which is disadvantageous to flower bud differentiation. The solution is to divide the pot as soon as possible by using the second planting.

7. Improper depth: small varieties are planted in a bucket-shaped deep basin, the basin soil is too deep, leaf buds and flower buds can not be unearthed. The depth of mud layer is less than 16 cm or the basin mud is too loose. in windy areas, the leaves of large and medium-sized varieties move, the root system can not stabilize the plant, and the flower buds attached to the base of petiole are not tranquil and can not develop normally.

8. The container is transparent: Lotus flower bud differentiation needs a dark environment. Glass containers or white plastic pots are not conducive to flower bud differentiation.
