The reasons for the differences in sweetness of watermelon are as follows: first, the genetic basis of watermelon varieties is different, second, the maturity of watermelon is different when picking, the third is different climatic factors and soil texture, and the fourth is the influence of cultivation management. For example, some watermelon varieties contain only 5%-6% sugar, while high-sugar varieties contain up to 12% sugar; some varieties, such as Zhengzhou 3 well-done, have the highest sugar content, but decrease when they are fully mature. However, when Xinhongbao and Mibao were picked later, the sugar content not only did not decrease, but increased. Generally speaking, sufficient light and large temperature difference between day and night are conducive to the transformation of nutrients and sugar accumulation; Rain Water, low temperature and low light, small temperature difference between day and night, less nutrient accumulation. First of all, select varieties with high sugar content. Among the early-maturing varieties, the sugar content of Zhengza 5 was 10.5%-11%, and Jingxin 1 was about 11%. In the middle-maturing varieties, the sugar content of Zhengza 6 was about 11%, and that of Xinhongbao was 10%-11%. The sugar content of Fengshou No. 2 and Fengshou No. 3 was 10% and 11%. In late-maturing varieties, the sugar content of Hongyou 2 is about 11%. The sugar content of seedless watermelon Heimi 2 is 11%, and the sugar content of Baoguan, a characteristic yellow skin and red meat precocious variety, is 12%.

Secondly, it is necessary to apply a sufficient amount of high-quality base fertilizer. In the application of fertilizer, organic fertilizer should be given priority to, supplemented by chemical fertilizer. In the structure of fertilizer, nitrogen and potassium fertilizer should be the main fertilizer, followed by phosphate fertilizer, combined with the application of appropriate amount of trace element fertilizer. Among organic fertilizers, we advocate the application of all kinds of cake fertilizer, soil fertilizer and plant ash, actively promote organic active compound fertilizer and bio-organic compound fertilizer, and properly apply high content of all-element compound fertilizer to avoid single application of nitrogen fertilizer. In the base fertilizer, 75kg of cake fertilizer, 4000kg of soil fertilizer, 50kg of plant ash, 100kg of bio-organic compound fertilizer, 50kg of ammonium bicarbonate, 100kg of special organic compound fertilizer and 30kg of high content compound fertilizer should be applied per mu. Of course, all localities should increase or decrease the dosage according to the soil quality and fertility.

Third, improve the application level of base fertilizer. Watermelon base fertilizer application method, one is to open ditch strip application, the other is to hit the nest hole application, there are also a few sprinkler. The base fertilizer of watermelon should be applied in stages and used in different levels. The first fertilization is about 20 days before melon seedling planting, 70% of the total base fertilizer is applied, and the depth is 25 cm; the second fertilization is 10 days before melon seedling planting, 30% of the total base fertilizer is applied, and the depth is 10 cm. It is necessary to mix it evenly with the soil while fertilizing, and then cover the soil. The second time should be applied at the hole, leaving a mark after application, so as to facilitate the transplanting of melon seedlings according to the hole, quickly absorb nutrients and improve the utilization rate of fertilizer.
