(Taiwan Business Daily News) the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced yesterday that it will allow the import of Canadian bone-and-bone beef and its products under the age of 30 months. Taiwan and Canada will also sign an agreement on avoidance of double taxation and negotiate a bilateral investment agreement in the near future.

At a press conference held by the Ministry of Economic Affairs yesterday, Liang Guoxin, Vice Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, explained the economic and trade issues of Taiwan and Canada with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and the Council of Agriculture, and other units.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs said that since 1996, Taiwan has agreed to import boneless beef under the age of 30 months in Canada, and the items of bony beef and beef products under the age of 30 months in Canada are the same as those in the United States. that is, skulls, eyes, brain, spinal cord, minced meat and viscera and other products are prohibited from import, which is in line with Taiwan's current food hygiene management law.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs stressed that the government will continue to strictly implement the "three tubes and five cards." in addition to controlling the source, the border and the market, it will also take measures such as checking certificates, confirming marks, unpacking inspection, sampling inspection, and ascertaining information. to ensure public health and food safety.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs believes that once the issue of Canadian beef import is resolved and an agreement to avoid double taxation is signed with Canada, Canada will start negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement with Taiwan.

Since Canada is a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), the Ministry of Economic Affairs believes that consolidating the bilateral economic and trade relations between Taiwan and Canada and using the negotiation framework of the investment agreement can create favorable conditions for Taiwan's accession to the TPP.
