Shipments of the world's top five brands of notebook computers (NB) fell by about 3% in February, similar to the same period last year. Due to the conservative trend of brand factories, international professional organizations estimate that NB shipments will decline by about 7% in the first quarter.

Jian Peiping, a senior analyst at DIGITIMES Research, said that after a sharp decline in shipments of NB (excluding detachable models) in January compared with December, the monthly decline in shipments of the world's top five brands or top three contract factories was between 0 and 3 per cent in February, similar to the trend from January to February last year.

Jian Peiping pointed out that the decline in February mainly reflected the effect of inventory adjustment, but the brand end seemed to be more conservative in March, setting variables for the recovery of NB shipments in the first quarter of 2014, with an annual decline of about 7 per cent.

Among all brand factories, HP (HPQ) NB shipments in February grew by more than 30% against the trend, with the best performance, while other brands declined from January. Asustek shipments fell more than 10 per cent in February, but still held to the level of 1.3 million (excluding the detachable T100s), opening the gap with Acer for two months in a row. Acer shipped about 1 million units in February, on a par with Apple.

Jian Peiping said that NB shipments of all contract factories also declined in February compared with January, with the same range, but there may be a more obvious drop in March. Compal is expected to have a more significant increase in the recovery of Lenovo shipments, while Inerda is affected by the start of the transfer of orders from Toshiba in the new year, and NB shipments are relatively weak.

In terms of vendor dynamics, DIGITIMES Research pointed out that Microsoft's new CEO will be replaced by Satya Nadella, who has no experience in Windows and hardware development, coupled with the fact that Microsoft has launched a low license fee program of $300 NB, which can be interpreted as Microsoft's board of directors expecting Nadella to make drastic reforms to Windows and hardware without being affected by the burden of the past.
