Pea is an annual climbing herb planted in spring or autumn. It is the fourth largest bean crop in the world. It can be used as human food and animal feed. The planting area of pea in China is about 1,295,900 hectares, with a total output of 10,274,300 tons. When are peas planted? How long does the pea grow? Let's learn about it together with Xiaobian today!

Pea planting time

Pea is a cold-loving long-day crop, not heat-resistant, so it is popular in winter planting in many places in the Yangtze River Basin, autumn sowing and autumn harvest; of course, spring sowing and summer harvest are still generally adopted in alpine areas and northern China. Since pea is not strict with the length of sunshine, as long as suitable varieties are selected, spring and autumn planting can also be carried out in the Yangtze River Basin.

1. Overwintering planting: Overwintering planting is the most important planting form in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Generally, winter fallow land is used, especially cotton fields after cotton harvest. Cotton stalks can be used as natural supports, and the purpose of increasing income and raising land can be achieved. Winter planting is generally sown from late October to mid-November, overwintering in the open field, and harvesting in April to May of the following year. Sowing too early, too vigorous growth before winter, easy to freeze to death when winter cold wave comes; sowing too late, the roots of plants do not develop enough before winter, late spring vine, low yield.

2. Spring planting: sowing in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River from late February to early March and harvesting before high temperature; spring sowing and summer harvest in Northeast China, generally sowing in April to May, and early sowing covered with small shed and plastic film according to needs. Spring planting growth period is short, early low temperature, late high temperature, so choose short-term cold-resistant varieties, such as red flower silk, sweet crisp peas, etc., and try to sow early.

3. Autumn planting: Early maturity varieties should be selected for autumn planting, sown in early September, and harvested before the cold wave comes in late November. Autumn planting growth period is also short, can be advanced by summer in the shade shed seedlings, winter plastic film cover to extend the growth period.

The growing habits of peas

1. Pea likes freezing and humid climate, cold tolerance, heat intolerance, seedling tolerance of 5℃ low temperature, growth period of 12-16℃, pod stage of 15-20℃ over 25℃ low fertilization rate, pod less, low yield.

Peas are long-day plants. The growth period of most varieties was shorter in the north than in the south. In the north, the growth period of pea is 65-75 days for early maturing species, 75-100 days for medium maturing species and 100-185 days for late maturing species.

3. Although pea is not strict with soil requirements, it can be planted on sandy soil with good drainage or newly reclaimed land, but it is better to loose neutral (pH6.0-7.0) soil with high organic matter, which is beneficial to seedling emergence and rhizobia development. When soil acidity is lower than pH5.5, diseases are easy to occur and pod setting rate is reduced. Lime should be added to improve it. Pea roots deep, slightly drought-tolerant and not tolerant of moisture, poor drainage or seeding easy to rot roots, flowering drought poor fertilization, easy to form empty pods or dehiscent pods.

Pea Sowing Technique

1. Seed selection and germination: select seeds with 40% saline before sowing, remove seeds that are not full or infested, germinate seeds before sowing, and when seeds sprout, treat seeds at 0~2℃ for 15 days before sowing.

2. Rhizobium seed dressing: pea seed dressing with Rhizobium is an effective measure for increasing yield. After seed dressing with Rhizobium, nodules increase, stems and leaves grow vigorously, pods are more and yield is high. Seed dressing method is to use Rhizobium 10~19 g per mu, add a little water and mix well with seeds before sowing.

3. Fertilization and sowing: before sowing in the field, apply fully decomposed manure, compost and a certain amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, especially phosphorus fertilizer, which has obvious yield increasing effect. Pea is planted on demand, row spacing is 10~20 cm, plant spacing in row is 5 cm, 2~6 seeds are sown in each hole, and soil is covered with 5~6 cm when the soil is wet. When the soil is dry, the cover is slightly thicker. 10 - 15 kg seeds per mu.
