Platycodon grandiflorum is mainly distributed in Northeast, North, East and Central China provinces, as well as Guangdong, Guangxi (northern), Guizhou, southeastern Yunnan (Mengzi, Yanshan, Wenshan), Sichuan (east of Pingwu and Liangshan) and Shaanxi. It is also found in the far East of North Korea, Japan, Russia and the southern part of East Siberia.

In June 2012, Taihe County, Anhui Province, was known as "the hometown of Platycodon grandiflorum" by the Flower and Food Professional Committee of China Food Industry Association.

Environment of Origin of Platycodon grandiflorum

Platycodon grandiflorum likes cool climate, cold resistance and sunshine. Platycodon grandiflorum is suitable to be cultivated in the hilly area below 1100 meters above sea level. The neutral sandy loam rich in phosphorus and potassium fertilizer grows better. The seed life is 1 year and stored at low temperature. It can prolong the seed life. The germination rate of 0-4 ℃ dry storage seeds was 3.5-4 times higher than that of normal temperature storage for 18 months. The seed germination rate is 70%, the temperature is 18-25 ℃, there is enough temperature, and the seedlings will emerge 15 days after sowing.

Variety classification of Platycodon grandiflorum

1. Southern Platycodon grandiflorum: southern Platycodon grandiflorum was mainly wild products in the past, but there are more cultivated products. It is produced in Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

2. Northern Platycodon grandiflorum: compared with southern Platycodon grandiflorum, its shape is more slender, branching is common, physique is lighter, northern Platycodon grandiflorum is mostly wild, produced in Northeast and North China.

3. The wild Platycodon grandiflorum produced in southwest China (Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and other places) has larger Reed head and shorter taproot.
