Cordyceps sinensis has limited resources because of its narrow distribution, low natural parasitism rate and harsh living conditions. In recent years, due to the serious man-made damage to the ecological environment of the main producing areas of Cordyceps sinensis, a large number of blind and unreasonable mining has led to the decrease of resources and the decrease of output year by year. Cordyceps sinensis on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is distributed in Nagqu area of Xizang, Nyingchi Prefecture, Qamdo Prefecture, Yushu area and Guoluo Prefecture of Qinghai, Rangtang of Aba Prefecture of Sichuan, Litang, Batang and Dege of Ganzi Prefecture, north of Deqin and Zhongdian of Diqing Prefecture of Yunnan Province, and west of Maqu of Gannan Prefecture of Gansu Province.

Cordyceps sinensis is mainly produced in the upper reaches of the Jinsha River, Lancang River and Nujiang River. Liangshan in Sichuan Province in the east, Pulan County in Xizang in the west, Minshan in Gansu Province in the north, the Himalayas in the south and Longxue Mountain in Yunnan Province in the south. Xizang's Cordyceps sinensis production accounts for about 40% of the national Cordyceps sinensis output, Sichuan Province accounts for about 40% of the national Cordyceps sinensis output, and Yunnan Province and Qinghai Province account for about 10% each.

Cordyceps sinensis refers to the general name of Cordyceps fungi in a broad sense, including Cordyceps sinensis. The species of Cordyceps are basically named after the morphological characteristics, host, place name and person name of its sexual generation, so each species of Cordyceps is the name of a single Cordyceps fungus, and more than 400 species of Cordyceps have been found. "Cordyceps" refers to Cordyceps sinensis, which is mainly produced in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and endemic to China.

Cordyceps fungi belong to fungal kingdom, fungal phylum, ascomycete subphylum, Rhizoctonia, ergot order, ergot family, Cordyceps genus, parasitic on insects, spiders, macrocysts and ergot fungi and form fruiting bodies, forming a wide variety of groups, widely distributed all over the world.
