The spawning season of the giant salamander is from July to August every year, the eggs are laid in the rock cave, each tail lays more than 300 eggs, the rest of the rearing task is given to the male salamander. The male salamander curls his body into a semicircle and surrounds the eggs to avoid being washed away by water or suffering from enemy damage until the young salamander hatches after 2 weeks. After 15 days and 40 days, the young salamander is willing to leave after 15 days. The lifespan of giant salamander is also the longest among amphibians and can live as long as 130 years under the condition of artificial breeding.

Dazhu is ferocious and carnivorous, feeding on aquatic insects, fish, crabs, shrimp, frogs, snakes, soft-shelled turtles, rats, birds and so on. The way of predation is "waiting for the rabbit". Its teeth can not be chewed, but open its mouth to swallow the food whole, and then slowly digest it in the stomach.

The giant salamander generally hides between the rocks of the mountain stream, and the cave is located below the surface of the water. Stay in the beach at night, once the prey is found passing by, it will make a sudden attack, because the teeth in its mouth are sharp and dense, it is difficult for the prey to escape after entering the mouth. Baby fish have a strong ability to withstand hunger and will not starve to death even if they are kept in cool water for two or three years without eating. It can also overeat, and a good meal can gain 1/5 of its weight. When there is a lack of food, there will be cannibalism of the same kind, and even satisfy hunger with eggs. Usually hide, like to put the color of the body and the surrounding stones, lest natural enemies find it.

The natural distribution of the origin of Chinese giant salamander is mainly concentrated in five areas of China:

1. Zhangjiajie, Jiangyong, Yueyang and Wuyi Mountain, Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture, Fujian Province.

The establishment of the country's first county baby fish research institute, in 2001, the giant salamander as the county mascot. The artificial breeding technology of giant salamander in Jing'an County is the leading in the country. It has been identified by relevant experts of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has the technical conditions for large-scale development and utilization of giant salamander. In August 2005, it was awarded the title of "hometown of Chinese Baby Fish" by China Aquatic processing and Circulation Association.
