Etiology

1. Lack of minerals in feed, mainly lack of calcium and phosphorus. At present, many farmers prepare their own feed, using corn meal, wheat bran, peanut meal, soybean meal, auxin, vitamins, antibiotics, etc., but without adding mineral feed, so relying entirely on the minerals in these feed materials is far from meeting the needs of bamboo mouse bone development, resulting in incomplete tooth calcification and broken teeth.

2. Unscientific addition of antibiotics to feed. The farmers with the worst broken teeth I visited have been adding large doses of oxytetracycline to their feed to prevent the disease since they were introduced. However, the long-term use of tetracycline drugs such as oxytetracycline has serious side effects on teeth, such as discoloration of teeth, affecting the development and formation of teeth, enamel dysplasia and poor calcification of teeth, so they are more prone to wear and tear. Dental caries are more likely to occur, and in serious cases, teeth will be broken or fall off.

3. It may be the effect of some kind of germ. according to some farmers, it is said that there has been a certain degree of infectivity. bamboo rats fed with the same feeding method and feed have lost their teeth in some fields, but some have not; moreover, they have lost their teeth in farm A first. as the workers of farm A went to farm B, as a result, field B also appeared. This has not been verified yet. I hope to have the opportunity to do laboratory testing in the future.

Solution method

1. Use full-price feed to meet all aspects of nutritional needs of bamboo rats. Especially beginner farmers, in the absence of theoretical knowledge, do not prepare their own feed, directly with pig feed or chicken full-price feed mixed with rice bran can be fed.

2. If farmers prepare their own feed, they must add mineral feed. Pig premix can be used, and the general addition is about 4%.

3. Antibiotics must not be added to the feed for a long time. The side effects of adding antibiotics are: destroying the microbial digestive system of bamboo rats, making it impossible for bamboo rats to digest roughage, and bamboo rats can eat coarse fiber feed like bamboo because it is digested by microorganisms rather than digestive juices; affect bone calcification, resulting in bone loosening; make bamboo rats have drug resistance, when it comes to treatment, the effect of medicine is not good; unnecessary increase in feeding costs.

4. if you observe the bamboo mouse carefully and find that there is something wrong with your teeth, you should deal with it in time, such as disinfecting the injured site to prevent bacterial infection of the gums; feed more soft roughage, such as sweet potatoes, like grass stalks, etc., and feed less bamboo and other too hard coarse fodder.
