Original title: Imported soybean is not a flood beast Domestic soybean needs to take "edible" as the way out

Comprehensive report on agriculture, rural areas and farmers: Under the background of increasing dependence of domestic soybeans on foreign countries, the on-site demonstration meeting of national soybean green yield increase and efficiency technology mode closed in Heihe City, Heilongjiang Province on September 14 reached consensus: imported soybeans are not flood beasts; domestic soybeans are positioned at high protein and edible, and only by "two increases and one decrease"(improving yield, improving quality and reducing cost) can there be a way out.

Pan Wenbo, deputy director of the Crop Production Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, introduced that last year the national soybean consumption was 93 million tons, and the domestic output was only more than 10 million tons, that is to say, more than 80% needed to be imported; last year, 81.69 million tons of soybeans and 8.8179 million tons of soybean oil were imported, accounting for 80% of the international soybean and soybean oil trade volume. "These two 80% are worth pondering for policy makers, production managers and researchers."

Sun Huan, a famous soybean genetic breeder and researcher at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Jilin Province, said that the surge in imported soybeans is something that will happen sooner or later. First of all, this is related to China's national conditions of more people and less land: producing one ton of soybeans uses three times more land than producing one ton of corn. Brazil, the main soybean producing area in the world, has 230 million hectares of wasteland in the country. With 100 million hectares of cattle grazing, there are still 1.95 billion mu left, which is all the cultivated land in China. Second, it has to do with people getting richer: from eating well to eating well. The main criterion for eating well is high quality protein plus vegetable oil. China's per capita soybean consumption has reached 66.9 kg, which is the level of developed countries; per capita vegetable oil consumption is 88.7 kg, which is also very high. "Such a large amount of consumption must be imported." Third, this is related to industrialization: at present, among China's main agricultural products, only rice is basically self-sufficient, while other agricultural products, such as corn and soybeans, are imported CIF prices lower than domestic prices, and a large number of imports are objective laws.

However, Sun Huan stressed that there is no need to panic about this. The solution lies in "imported soybeans are positioned for oil extraction, basically genetically modified; domestic soybeans are positioned for food, non-genetically modified." First of all, domestic soybean breeding research should change the past to improve the oil yield, replace imports as the main goal, to improve the protein content of "edible, special, special use". Domestic soybean should adopt defensive strategy instead of offensive strategy. Defend against what? Strictly prevent genetically modified soybeans from entering the food market and prevent foreign non-genetically modified soybeans from entering. Secondly, at present, China's per capita meat consumption is 64 kg, far exceeding the standard of 29 kg in the National Guidelines for Food and Nutrition Development (2014 - 2020), resulting in high prevalence of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. "Guide" clearly "vigorously develop soybean products", 13 kg per capita per year, 35.6 grams per day. Therefore, the development of edible soybeans is not only the way out for domestic soybeans, but also the responsibility for the health of the Chinese nation. (Reporter Qu Jian)
