Panda blood is commonly known as Rh-negative blood group. Human erythrocyte blood group consists of more than 20 blood group systems. ABO and Rh blood groups are the two blood group systems most closely related to human blood transfusion. When there is a D blood group substance (antigen) on a person's erythrocytes, it is called Rh positive, and when it lacks D antigen, it is Rh negative. Rh-negative blood is relatively rare, is a very rare type of blood, so it is also known as "panda blood", in which AB Rh-negative blood is more rare.

Rh negative blood group is a kind of Rh blood group system. Most people know that A, B, O and AB all belong to ABO blood group system. In fact, there are not only these four blood types, but dozens of types or systems, which are huge and complex. Because the antigenicity of blood groups other than A, B, O and AB is not strong, clinicians believe that in addition to the above four blood groups, plus Rh blood group system is the most widely used and most important blood group.

Blood type is determined according to the different glycoprotein-containing blood group antigens on the erythrocyte membrane structure, different blood types can not be casually transfusion with each other. For example, in addition to B antigen, the red blood cells of people with type B blood also contain antibodies against type A blood, which can immunagglutinate with red blood cells with type A blood antigen. If the blood of a type A blood donor is mistakenly transfused to a type B recipient, the An antigen on the type A red blood cell will react with the An antibody of the type B recipient, causing the type A red blood cell to agglutinate and cause hemolysis reaction, which is very dangerous. in order to avoid immunity and hemolysis reaction, the blood type of the donor and the recipient should be the same.

In China, more than 99% of Rh blood groups are positive, so hemolysis due to Rh blood group incompatibility during blood transfusion is rare, but less common does not mean no hemolysis. If a recipient with a Rh-negative blood group transfusions Rh-positive blood, it will cause an immune hemolysis. The right thing to do is that the recipient and the donor have the same blood type, that is, they are both Rh-negative.

Rh negative blood type is different from A, B, O and AB blood groups, the latter blood type is evenly distributed in the population, and the blood sources of several blood types are easy to find. Rh-negative blood type is a rare blood type, accounting for less than 1% of people with ABO blood type. It is understood that among the 3 million people who participated in blood donation in a certain city, only 3300 people belonged to Rh-negative blood type. The probability of Rh negative in patients undergoing clinical surgery was 5 to 7, 000. By contrast, Rh-negative blood is very precious.
