Mulberry silk and tussah silk are both silk, and their formation and production methods are roughly the same. the difference is mainly caused by the origin and the variety of silkworms. Mulberry silk is made from mulberry cocoons, while tussah silk is made from tussah cocoons. let's take a look at the difference and distribution of producing areas between mulberry silk and tussah silk.

Distribution of producing area of Mulberry Silk

The so-called mulberry silk is the silk extracted from the cocoon of planting mulberry and raising domestic silkworm. this silk has a yellowish color, delicate and smooth feel, and has a faint smell of animal fiber. The quilt made of mulberry silk is very soft and intimate, and the silk made by hand is more durable.

Mulberry silk is mainly produced in East China, Southwest China and North Sichuan, among which the related titles are "House of Silk"-Hangzhou, "Silk quilt production Base"-Tongxiang, Zhejiang Jiaxing, hometown of Chinese cocoon silk (only)-Jiangsu Haian, Chinese cocoon capital-Jiangsu Dongtai Fu'an, "hometown of silk quilt"-Wujiang Zhenze in Jiangsu and Baoning Prefecture in Sichuan. The project base for the transfer of mulberry from east to west-- Ankang, Pingli, Ningshan, Xunyang, Shiquan and other places, "hometown of silkworms-- Sichuan Santai."

Distribution of producing area of tussah silk

Tussah silk is drawn from tussah cocoons. Tussah silkworms, commonly known as wild silkworms, mainly live in the northern region. They are artificially reared in the wild tussah forest and feed on tussah leaves.

Tussah silk is mainly produced in Henan, Liaoning, Shandong and other places in the north. Liaoning is the main producing area of tussah silk quilt. Nanzhao County in Henan Province is named as the "hometown of tussah silkworm" in China. and passed the "unified tussah" origin registration certification of the General Administration of quality Inspection and Quarantine.

The cocoon colors of silkworm and tussah are different.

Mulberry silkworms feed on mulberry leaves and belong to Lepidoptera, which belongs to the family Lepidoptera, while tussah silkworms mainly eat tussah leaves, and their feeding methods are more similar to those of wild silkworms, which belong to Lepidoptera. Strictly speaking, they are two kinds of insects. because they do not belong to the same family and species, because the silk cocoons are quite different. The cocoons formed by silkworms are mostly glittering and translucent white, while the tussah cocoons are mostly dark brown and gray green.

The processes of mulberry silk and tussah silk are different.

Mulberry silk shows a natural white, so when making silk quilt, it does not need to go through any chemical bleaching process at all. therefore, a real and veritable pure natural silk quilt must be made from mulberry cocoon and the only raw material. Tussah silk (cocoon) is different, if it is directly made into a quilt without processing, whether it is color or feel, it is usually difficult for consumers to accept, in order to feel and color closer to "mulberry silk", often through the addition of "fluorescent brightener" and other techniques for discoloration and chemical bleaching, and fluorescent agent has been proved by modern science to have carcinogenic effect on the human body, harmful to health. As long as it is bedding, safety and health must be the first factor, so in the business clearly told the case, the vast majority of customers would rather spend more money to buy mulberry silk quilt, more rest assured and sense of security.

The colors of mulberry silk and tussah silk are different.

Mulberry silk is a natural milky white, if you look carefully, you will also find a touch of green or yellow, the overall luster is bright. And after bleaching tussah silk, is also white, but a kind of pale, like A4 paper, white is very regular, white is very organized, white is lifeless.

The diameters of mulberry silk and tussah silk are different.

The toughness and length of the fiber determine the way in which the fiber will be processed and molded in the future. at present, there are two kinds of hand-made and mechanisms. mulberry silk is a long fiber, just like an elastic rubber band, which has superior elasticity and toughness and extends 10 times continuously. A small cocoon silk cotton, even if pulled to the area of the whole quilt, will not break, so it is more suitable for manual drawing silk quilt. The tussah silk fiber is shorter and the elastic toughness is poor, so the "machine-made silk quilt" is mostly tussah silk.
