Identification method of Polygala tenuifolia

1. Character identification: Polygala is cylindrical, slightly curved, 3-15 cm long, 3-8 mm in diameter, grayish yellow to grayish brown on the surface, with dense and sunken transverse wrinkles, longitudinal wrinkles and cracks, the transverse wrinkles of the old root are denser and more sunken, slightly nodular, hard and brittle, easy to break, the cross-section skin is brownish yellow, the wood is yellowish white, the skin is easy to peel off with the wood, slightly, bitter, slightly pungent, chewing has a sting in the throat.

2. Microscopic identification: in the cross section of Polygala tenuifolia, there were more than 10 rows of cork cells, more than 20 rows of parenchyma cells in the cortex, tangential fissures, broad phloem, radial fissures, ringed cambium, well-developed xylem, all lignified, and 3 rows of cells in ray width. Most parenchyma cells contain fatty oil droplets and some contain calcium oxalate cluster crystals and square crystals.

3. Physical and chemical identification: take about 0.5 grams of Polygala powder, plug it in a test tube, add 10 milliliters of hot water, keep it warm for 10 minutes, shake forcefully for 1 minute, produce persistent foam, and do not disappear within 10 minutes.
