Cyperus is a herbal medicine included in "Chinese Herbs," alias Sha Sui, Hou Hou, Di Mao, etc. It is the stem of Cyperus plant of Cyperaceae family. It has the effect of soothing liver and regulating qi, regulating menstruation and relieving pain. It has therapeutic effect on liver and stomach disharmony, qi depression, chest and abdomen flank pain, phlegm fullness, irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia and leucorrhea. Let's take a look at the efficacy and function of Cyperus together!

The medicinal value of Cyperus

[Nature] pungent, slightly bitter, sweet, mild nature.

Liver and triple energizer meridians.

[Efficacy] Shugan Qiqi, regulating menstruation and relieving pain. It is indicated for liver and stomach disharmony, qi depression, chest, abdomen and rib pain, phlegm fullness, irregular menstruation and metrorrhagia.

The medicinal effects of Cyperus

1. Regulating qi and relieving depression: It is used for chest and hypochondrium pain and stomach pain caused by liver qi stagnation. It is combined with Bupleurum chinense and green tangerine peel to treat chest and hypochondrium pain, and galangal to treat stomach cold pain.

2. Regulate menstruation and relieve pain: it is used for irregular menstruation and abdominal pain caused by stagnation of liver qi, and it is used with Artemisia argyi to treat menstrual abdominal pain caused by cold coagulation and qi stagnation.

Pharmacological Action of Cyperus

1. Effect on cardiovascular system: Former Soviet scholars reported that subcutaneous injection of cyperus water or water-alcohol extract into frogs can stop frog hearts in systolic phase. At lower concentrations, it had cardiotonic or heart rate slowing effects on isolated frog hearts, frog hearts, rabbit hearts and cat hearts in situ. The aqueous solution of total alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids and phenolic compounds of Cyperus seu also has the effect of strengthening heart and slowing heart rate, and has obvious antihypertensive effect.

2. Estrogen-like effect: The ovariectomized rats showed that the volatile oil of Cyperus seu had mild estrogen-like activity. The volatile oil was injected subcutaneously twice at an interval of 6 hours, and the vaginal epithelium was completely keratinized 48 hours later. 0.3 After 3 ml administration, many white blood cells appeared in the large number of keratinocytes. The appearance of white blood cells may be caused by the stimulation of volatile oil.

3. Effect on uterus: Zhang Fa reported that 5% Cyperus fluid extract inhibited the isolated uterus of guinea pigs, rabbits, cats and dogs, whether pregnant or not, and weakened its contractility and muscle tension. Its action nature is quite similar to angelica element, but weaker.

4. Anti-inflammatory effect: Cyperus alcohol extract 100 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection, carrageenan and formaldehyde induced rat foot swelling has obvious inhibitory effect. This effect is stronger than 5~10 mg/kg hydrocortisone. Gupta MB was proved to be triterpenoid compounds. Among them, IV-B has anti-inflammatory effect on carrageenin-induced foot swelling, 8 times stronger than hydrocortisone, and 3 times larger safety range. Formaldehyde sex swollen feet also have an inhibitory effect.

5. Effect on intestine: Liu Guoqing et al. reported that isolated intestine of rabbits was prepared according to conventional methods, and the effect of Cyperus essential oil on isolated intestine was recorded with a drum. When the concentration of Cyperus essential oil was 5 μ g/ml, it could inhibit the contraction of intestine, and when the concentration increased to 20 μ g/ml, it showed obvious inhibition, which reduced the contraction amplitude and tension of intestine. SinghN also reported direct inhibition of isolated rabbit ileal smooth muscle by cyperol extract at a concentration of 20 μ g/ml.

6. Antibacterial effect: In vitro test, Cyperus volatile oil has inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and is ineffective on other bacteria. Cyperene Ⅰ and Ⅱ had stronger bacteriostatic activity than volatile oil, and were also effective against Shigella sonnei. Hydrogenation does not affect its antibacterial activity. Cyperone is completely ineffective. Cyperus extract also has inhibitory effect on some fungi.

7. Other effects: Cyperus alcohol extract has protective effect on bronchospasm induced by histamine spray in guinea pigs. The prostaglandin biosynthesis inhibitor in Cyperus seu L. is mainly a-cyperone.
