Litchi bug is a fruit tree pest, also known as litchi stink bug, belongs to the family Hemiptera, mainly harms litchi and longan, but also other disease-free plants. The adult is about 25mm long, shield-shaped and yellowish brown. China is distributed in Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and other provinces and regions. Let's take a look at the control methods of litchi bugs.

Morphological characteristics

Litchi bug adult body is about 25 mm long, shield-shaped, yellow-brown, ventral covered with white wax powder, smelly glands, opening in the ventral part of the chest at the junction of the back chest. Ovoid, 2.5 to 2.7 mm long, light green, dark gray before turning. The nymph is red and black. The egg is nearly spherical, 2.5 to 2.7 mm in diameter, light green at first birth, a few yellowish, purplish red near hatching, and often 14 grains gather into blocks.

Life habits

Litchi bugs occur one generation a year, overwintering with adults in rich foliage or on the back of old leaves. The activity resumed in March and April of the following year and laid eggs on the back of the leaves. Nymphs are in full bloom in May and June. The nymph has a total of 5 years old and lasts for about 2 months. Most of the nymphs become adults in July and enter the overwintering period after cold weather. Nymphs and adults suck the juices of tender shoots, spikes and young fruits of litchi and longan, resulting in flower and fruit drop. In case of disturbance, often eject odorous liquid for self-defense, touch the tender shoots, and the young fruit will become scorched brown.

Damaging symptoms

The adults and nymphs of litchi bug stabbed and sucked the juice of twigs, flowers and young fruits, resulting in falling flowers and fruits. The odorous liquid secreted by it touches the stamens, tender leaves and young fruits, which can lead to the death of the contact site, seriously affect the yield, or even no harvest.

Prevention and cure method

1. Agricultural control: agricultural control is mainly artificial capture. Litchi bugs are frozen in winter (below 10 ℃) and are not easy to take off. They suddenly shake branches violently, causing overwintering adults to fall to the ground and burn them centrally. Flat-bellied wasps are used to control litchi bugs.

2. Chemical control: before spawning a large number of overwintering adults in early spring, trichlorfon solution (800-1000 times) was sprayed to eliminate overwintering adults. When the nymphs were sprayed for the second time, the 3rd instar nymphs were wiped out in large quantities. The areas with high insect population density are sprayed comprehensively, and the areas with low insect population density and few flowering fruit trees are mainly applied. A large area of litchi area should be controlled by aircraft.
