The pistachio tree is a small deciduous tree of the genus Coptis in the lacquer family, which is resistant to drought, light, shade, moisture and summer waterlogging, and has a strong drought resistance. Its main root is 7-8 meters deep into the soil layer, and the horizontal root is developed, which can extend more than 10 meters. It is the most drought-resistant fruit tree and excellent species of soil and water conservation in the world. Let's take a look at the planting conditions of pistachio trees.

Soil condition

Pistachio trees have strong adaptability to soil and can grow on almost all types of soils, especially deep, thick, light or dry calcareous sandy loam and yellow loam, in clay loam, sandy gravel soil, shallow chestnut soil, light loam, slightly salinized soil, pH7.7-8.0. they can also grow and bear fruit in gravelly, thin mountain and semi-desert land, requiring trace elements such as potassium and iron, and the fruit is not tolerant to saline-alkali. Cannot grow in places that are too wet and stagnant.

Water condition

In the suitable planting area, the annual precipitation of pistachio trees is generally in the range of 200-400 mm, and it grows well and bears full fruit, and it can also grow and blossom tenaciously in areas with annual precipitation below 80 mm, but the lack of water in the sensitive period of water demand in summer will lead to no harvest of fruit grains. The best pistachio orchards in Iran are considered to be the worst desert in the world at an altitude of 4000 feet above sea level, with an average annual rainfall of 254mm-381mm, less than 127mm in the south and east, a temperature as high as 37.8mm in summer in the northern part of the plateau, annual sunshine of 2500-3000 hours, low requirements for air humidity and a surface water level of less than 3 meters.

Temperature condition

Pistachio has strong adaptability to temperature. It can withstand 42 ℃ high temperature and-26 ℃ low temperature limit in Shufu county. In Sicily, the summer temperature is 23 ℃, the average temperature is 7.8 ℃, and the low temperature-3 ℃ is harmless to the tree. In the United States, it can tolerate a low temperature of-14.5 ℃ in the United States, while in Iran from-9.5 ℃ to 42 ℃, it can tolerate temperatures of-17 ℃ in some parts of the former Soviet Union. Iran is the best place for pistachio growth. The average January temperature variance in 7 years is-15 ℃, and the average temperature is 7.2 ℃. Pistachio trees need enough cold winter to break the dormancy of buds and long, hot and dry summers to ripen the fruit. The fruit needs a large temperature difference between day and night, and the fruit grows well in the range of the highest temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius and minus 32.8 degrees Celsius.
