A New Variety of Sweet Cherry Suitable for Planting in Shandong Province

Although Hebei Province is a suitable planting area for sweet cherry, the introduction of sweet cherry is relatively early, but the cultivation scale has been relatively small. The main reasons for restricting the development of sweet cherry industry are late fruit, low yield, poor quality, extensive management, non-standard high-quality and high-yield technology, low economic benefits and so on. In order to promote the rapid development of sweet cherry industry and provide reliable reference for cherry growers in variety selection, we have carried out the introduction, observation, selection and evaluation of sweet cherry varieties in recent years.

The introduced varieties were 11 sweet cherry varieties, such as early ruby, Shengli, Zhixihong, Red Ruby, Brooks, Jimos 3, short Branch Stella, Longxu, Zaohongzhu, Bingtang Crispy, Regina and so on. All of them were grafted on Benxi Mountain Sakura, the main local rootstock. When planting, the pollination tree is arranged in the north-south direction.

Through continuous observation for many years, comparing the fruit characters, high yield and resistance of each variety, we think that Zaohongzhu (early flowering April 5 ~ 7, full flowering April 8, fruit ripening period May 20 to June 1), Brooks (early flowering April 6 ~ 8, full flowering April 8 ~ 15, fruit ripening period May 25 to June 4) the fruit ripening period of the two varieties is close to the red lamp. The early high yield and fruit quality are good, which can be popularized and applied as early maturing varieties in the suitable planting area of sweet cherry in Hebei Province. Leijina (April 8 ~ 10, April 6 ~ 10, fruit maturity 12 ~ 18) and short branch Stella (early flowering April 20 ~ 22, full flowering April 23 ~ 28, fruit maturity June 15 ~ 20) two varieties mature later, similar to Samita, early high yield and fruit quality are also very good, so they can be popularized and applied in Yanshan area.
