Backup sow is a term in pig production, which generally refers to the sows that have not yet participated in mating after being selected, which are used to supplement the sows eliminated due to older age, poor reproductive performance or disease, so as to maintain the composition structure of young sows.

1. Full feeding stage: 20-60 kg is the stage to promote the full physical development of reserve sows, and the full-price diet with comprehensive nutrition should be fed according to the corresponding feeding standards.

Second, the restricted feeding stage: lean sows are generally restricted at 90-110 kg, while fat and fat sows can be restricted at 70 kg. The daily feed intake accounts for about 2% of body weight. The reserve sows were fed at the end of limited feeding two weeks before mating, and supplementary feeding was carried out to increase the number of ovulation.

Third, reasonable grouping and moderate exercise. In order to make the reserve sows grow and develop well, they should be divided into small groups according to their body weight. 4-6 sows can be raised in each column before their body weight is 60 kg, and then divided into 2-3 groups according to their body weight after 60 kg, which is beneficial to early estrus breeding. The backup sow house should be equipped with an outdoor playground to strengthen the physique and enhance the flexibility and firmness of the limbs.

Fourth, timely training. From an early age, reserve sows should strengthen training management, establish a harmonious relationship between people and pigs, and train pigs to develop good living habits. After feeding to a certain age, it will achieve sexual maturity, there is periodic estrus performance, but at this time the physical development is not yet fully mature. When sows are 150-180 days old, it is best to use adult boars to induce estrus and promote oestrus in sows.

Fifth, daily management. The suitable temperature of back-up sow house is 19: 21 ℃. In summer, attention should be paid to heat prevention and cooling. Once the room temperature exceeds 30 ℃, it will inhibit the secretion of sex hormones in reserve sows, resulting in non-estrus or abnormal estrus. In winter, we should strengthen the ventilation of the pig house, deal with the contradiction between temperature and ventilation, not only keep the suitable temperature, but also keep the air fresh. The environment and facilities of the barracks should be disinfected regularly, the pigs should be brushed regularly and the worms should be dewormed regularly.

Sixth, strictly carry out the immunization procedure. Timely immunization against foot-and-mouth disease, classical swine fever, parvovirus disease, pseudorabies, Japanese encephalitis and blue ear disease shall be carried out in accordance with the immunization procedure.
