1. Prepare the nest

Under the condition of artificial breeding, peony parrots can breed almost all the year round, but in cold winter and hot summer, the nest box should be removed and the breeding season should be controlled in spring and autumn. The preparation of the cage and nest box for breeding is described above. When the breeding season comes, a thick layer of 3~5cm saws can be laid in the nest box, and some soft weeds can be provided for peony parrots to nest.

2. Paired spawning

At the beginning of the breeding season, increase the supply of eggs, millet and green fodder to promote estrus, let them mate freely, and mate successfully. Peony parrots usually lay 6-8 eggs per litter, sometimes as many as 10.

3. Hatching and brooding

The incubation period is about 19-22 days, which is completely hatched by the female. During the incubation period, the female birds only leave the nest when they drink and defecate, leaving the nest 2-3 times a day for only 3-5 minutes each time. The male guards and feeds the female outside the cave. The nestling leaves the nest after 35-40 days. After the nestling leaves the nest, the nestling still needs to be fed for 2 weeks before it can live independently. At this time, the nestling should be separated from the parent bird so that the parent bird can continue to breed. Under normal circumstances, it is more appropriate to breed 2-4 litters a year. The chicks fully grew up and reached sexual maturity six and a half months after they came out of their shells. Ma Jing
