A new variety of jujube "Tainong 13-Shirley" with the orientation of "high-quality early-growing and early-ripening fruit" was officially unveiled! Do you know this variety of jujube? Have you ever eaten it? The following is to introduce this variety to you.

Early birth and good taste, jujube farmer: why didn't you say such a good variety earlier!

Honey jujube is one of the fruits rich in winter in Taiwan. the main production period falls between January and March. there are mid-leaf, Kaohsiung 8 (Zhenbao), Tainong 9 (Xinmi Wang) and Kaohsiung 12 (Zhenai) in January. Jintao and Kaohsiung 11 (Zhenmi) are the main late fruits from February to March. Although there are varieties such as middle leaf and Miki in the early fruit from November to December, the taste is not detailed enough, and the pericarp is often thick and astringent.

In order to solve the problem of poor early fruit quality, Feng Experimental Institute has finally developed an early variety which can be harvested 105 to 115 days after flowering after 13 years of breeding. This variety has fine and juicy pulp, thin peel, sweet and sour fruit, low astringency and good flavor. Because its mother is "Xuemi" and its appearance is bright and shiny, it is named "Tainong 13-Shirley". Chen Ganshu, director of the Feng Test Institute, revealed that some farmers were so amazed after they tried it that they even blurted out, "Why didn't you say it earlier?" "

Shirley jujube has large fruit shape and bright color, so it is quite suitable for New year's Day gifts.

Guo Zhanhong, an assistant researcher in the Department of Tropical Fruit trees at the Feng Experimental Institute, pointed out that Shirley can blossom around August 15 of the national calendar. Compared with other mid-term fruit varieties, which bloom from the end of September to mid-October, they can stagger the production period and avoid the imbalance between supply and demand caused by the over-concentration of the production period.

Through the cultivation experiment, it is found that Shirley has stable fruit, moderate yield, no brown spots, long harvest time, strong branches, toughness and not easy to break, fewer and shorter thorns on branches, and is more friendly and labor-saving to farmers' field management.

In addition to reducing the burden on farmers' field management, Shirley has other advantages that are conducive to marketing, including a flat, round fruit with an average weight of 135 to 145 grams (3.5 to 42 taels), and a bright and pleasing appearance like a green apple. especially suitable for New year's Day gifts. In addition, according to Ye Zhongbin's trial experience, Shirley has no significant change in appearance and taste after being placed at room temperature for 4 to 5 days, which can prolong the taste period of consumers and reduce the sales pressure on fruit growers and disk sellers.

Shirley jujube has the advantages of few thorns, good harvest, strong growth and high fruit rate, which is labor-saving for farmers.

The camera was pulled to Ye Zhongbin's collection yard, and there was an endless stream of guests coming to buy jujubes. With 35 years of experience in growing dates, he has long cultivated many loyal customers who drive to the door of the collection yard and directly place orders for distribution to their relatives and friends.

Ye Zhongbin was the first farmer to try to grow Shirley. After nearly a year of care, the harvest was just before the Lunar New year. He was sure that Shirley's quality was good enough to be positioned as a boutique fruit, and as soon as many guests became customers, they changed from other varieties to purchasing Shirley.

Chen Qingjin, chairman of the management committee of Yanchao's local "Jiaosu Tien Hou Palace", is a fresh eater. Chen Qingjin said that Shirley has fine fiber, thin skin, good taste and good preservation. for example, the quality of snow honey will change after three days. According to his observation, Shirley can still maintain a good taste at room temperature for a week. He added that Shirley's skin color is more white and shiny, so it is very suitable for gift giving. He has bought tens of thousands of yuan of Shirley to give to relatives and friends.

At present, Ye Zhongbin has set aside 10% of his orchard for trial planting Shirley, about 50 jujube trees, each with a yield of about 250 jin, with an average fruit weight of 4 to 4.5 taels. "the Feng Experimental Institute is relatively conservative in its evaluation of fruit weight," says Ye Zhongbin with a smile. Shirley is more labor-saving in management, mainly because it is easy to harvest with fewer thorns, strong growth and high fruit yield.

As it was the trial planting stage, and there was no reference information and market quotation on the market, Ye Zhongbin adopted the method of trial promotion, allowing door-to-door guests or disk merchants to taste the flavor first, and then set the price according to "cherish," which successfully attracted many people to buy new varieties. About 70% of the Shirley dates he planted this year are sold by himself, and 30% are purchased by disk dealers, but due to the long shelf life, the purchase price can also be 15 to 20 yuan higher than that of cherished ones, so Ye Zhongbin plans to expand the planting area of Shirley in the future.

However, Ye Zhongbin said frankly that Shirley is not 100% perfect, because Shirley belongs to a variety with thin peel, and if it encounters continuous winter rain, about 5% of the fruit will blacken or crack at the pedicel. Chiu Chu-ying, a researcher at the agricultural improvement farm in Kaohsiung District, also observed this, but she analyzed that Shirley had a short tree hanging period, and that if it could be harvested before the Lunar New year, it would reduce the chance of winter rain. In addition, Ye Zhongbin found that fertilizer management is the key to the thickness of Shirley's pericarp, including the timing of fertilization, the proportion of ingredients, the interval of fertilization, and so on. He is also testing whether the cultivation quality is consistent under different conditions, hoping to find out the best balance between yield and quality.

Both domestic and foreign sales have potential, and how to authorize Shirley jujube has attracted attention.

Kaohsiung City is the main jujube producing area, with a planting area of 800 hectares, accounting for about 35% of Taiwan's jujube output. Because of Shirley's characteristics, both domestic and foreign sales have advantages, Wang Zhengyi and many representatives of local farmers' associations pay special attention to Shirley's future authorization and promotion, which is also related to the economic benefits of creating local jujube varieties with local characteristics in Kaohsiung.

In response, Li Wenli, head of the tropical fruit tree department, responded that Shirley dates will be authorized in accordance with laws and regulations with the thinking of non-exclusive authorization and public goods, and the main purpose is to protect varieties from outflow, so as not to harm Taiwan farmers in turn. And if some of them can be sold overseas, it can reduce the pressure of competition in the local market.

Chen Ganshu added that the Feng Test Institute will position Shirley as a boutique fruit, which will be different from the general varieties and will no longer pursue acreage to separate the high-end market. Whether the weather and geographical conditions of Taiwan's counties and cities are suitable for planting sherry needs to be further studied through field trial research. At present, the Gaoping area is still the main planting area.

The participants generally thought that the taste and flavor of the Sherry jujube at the scene of the Xueli jujube viewing meeting in the Feng Experimental Institute were good.
