The black-brown colloid is common at the shedding of the branch root, which is caused by the overflow and drying of the internal milk. The quality is a little hard and brittle and easy to break. The skin of the cross section is white, with cracks, and the wood is yellowish. The breath is special and the taste is slightly sweet. The root strip is fat, thick, tight, with many horizontal lines and sweet taste.

Family Platycodon grandiflorum, Codonopsis pilosula is a perennial herb with milk. Leaves densely pilose, all nearly smooth glabrous; leaf blade ovate, narrowly ovate or lanceolate, flowers solitary on branches, alternate with petiole or nearly opposite; calyx almost not Adnate to ovary, cleft, Corolla superior, campanulate, yellowish green with purple spots, lobed, lower capsule nearly globose, seeds numerous, elliptic fine smooth, brownish yellow. Blossom and bear fruit from July to October.
