Gan Song, (Latin name: Nardostachys chinensis Batal.) Perennial herbs, the whole plant has a strong turpentine-like aroma. Basal leaves are few and sparse, leaf blade narrowly linear-oblanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, apex obtusely round, narrowing slightly below middle into petiole, base slightly expanded into sheath, entire, green above, light green below; main veins Ternate. Cymes densely rounded; pollen red; Corolla tubular, ovary inferior, style slender, protruding beyond Corolla, stigma funnelform. Achenes Obovate, florescence August.

As a medicine, Pinus elliottii refers to the root and rhizome of this species of Pinus elliottii and Pinus elliottii, which contributes to the effect of regulating qi and relieving pain, awakening the spleen and strengthening the stomach, and helps to treat epigastric pain, diet, toothache and beriberi.

Growth habit

Born in alpine steppe or sparse forest at 3000m to 4500 above sea level. Born in swamp meadows, floodplains and scrub grassy slopes.

Geographical distribution

Distributed in Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Sichuan, Guizhou, northwest Yunnan, Xizang. Produced in southern Qinghai and northern Sichuan.

Dry pine plants are propagated by roots or seeds, mainly in the wild, occasionally cultivated in India and China. When the seeds are ripe and sown in the cold-proof greenhouse, they need enough light to germinate; the seedlings grow up and then transplant to the greenhouse for winter; the following year, late spring and early summer are transplanted outdoors. Rhizome cutting can also be used for reproduction, and faster than seed reproduction; propagation materials choose autumn mature rhizome, summer harvest is easy to rot. Chauhan et al studied the two planting methods of asexual propagation and seedling transplanting of Pinus elliottii and three elevations of 1800, 2200 and 3600m, and found that the yield was significantly related to the planting treatment method, the age of transplanting seedlings and the elevation of nursery. The planting altitude is suitable for 2200-3600m, the best is 3600m ridge, but not less than 1800m, and fertilization can increase yield.

The yield of 3-year-old Pinus elliottii is much higher than that of the following year, and the suitable harvest time is from October to December. If it snows too early, the snow will make it very difficult to harvest, and drug farmers will rush to harvest the immature Pinus elliottii between May and June, which will seriously damage the resources.
