It is produced in southern Shaanxi and Gansu, northern Shandong, southern and western Anhui, Zhejiang (Dinghai, Hangzhou, Tianmu Mountain), Jiangxi (Xiushui), Henan, western and southeastern Hubei, Hunan (Cili), western, northeastern and southeastern Sichuan, and northern and western Guizhou (Weining). Born in sunny hillside forests, thickets or streams, elevation 100-2000 m (up to 2700 m in western Sichuan). Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Luda and other places have cultivation. The type specimens were collected from cultivated plants introduced to England from Shanghai, China.
