Last Updated: 2024/11/05, Bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and lilies are how gorgeous they are when they bloom and sleep soundly after they fade, but don't throw them away and do a good job in preventing heat. You can open them again after autumn!

How do dormant bulbous flowers spend the summer?

Flowers such as hyacinth, daffodils and sorrel bloom in autumn, winter and spring. After the flowers fade, they will enter a dormant period as the weather gets hotter. There are three general maintenance methods during the dormant period:

Ventilation maintenance of potted plants

After the bulb dormancy, the leaves will slowly wither, at this time must stop watering, otherwise high temperature and humidity, easy to cause root mildew.

First cut off the withered leaves and branches, then put them in a cool and ventilated place, wait for the weather to turn cool, and then resume watering, the underground bulbs will germinate again and thrive.

The advantage of this method is that after resuming watering, the cue ball will produce a lot of small balls, the number of balls will be greatly increased, the growth will be denser, and the pots will burst more easily.

Refrigerator storage

1. After the plant is dormant and withered, cut off all the branches and leaves, dig out the seed bulb, soak it in carbendazim solution for 15 minutes, and then put it in a cool and ventilated place to dry.

2. Wrap the treated seed balls in plastic bags or plastic wrap, and then store them in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2-7 degrees.

Sand storage

1. When the yellow leaves appear in the bulb flowers in summer, the water begins to be cut off. After the plants have withered, all the branches and leaves are cut off, and the bulbs are dug out. After disinfection, they are placed in a cool, dry and ventilated place to dry.

2. After drying, bury the seed ball in dry and breathable sand and store it without too much sand.

Tea bags, gauze bags, stockings, etc., can be used to store balls as long as they are dry and breathable. The advantage of storing bulbs is that when re-sowing in autumn, you can select good quality bulbs for cultivation and take advantage of the opportunity to change the soil.

How do non-dormant bulb flowers spend the summer?

Some bulbs bloom in summer, such as wind and rain orchid, safflower stone, hundred lotus and so on; some bulbs blossom in spring, but the branches and leaves in summer are still very luxuriant, such as weeping tube flower, Zhu Dinghong, four seasons, and so on. This kind of flowers are not dormant in summer, so we should pay attention to the following points when maintaining them:

1. Shading

The refraction of light in summer has a strong lethality to the twigs and leaves of flowers, and scorched leaves and plant types will collapse on the balcony for a period of time. So be sure to shade or move to the scattered light in summer.

2. Proper watering

Normal watering in summer, keep the soil moist and not wet, but be careful not to accumulate water, water is easy to cause rotten ball.

3. Fertilization

In summer flowering, thin fertilizer should be applied frequently, applying nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer or thin liquid fertilizer every two weeks or so.

4. Shave your head

Shaving your head after flowering can not only save water and nutrients, avoid rotting roots and balls in hot and hot weather, but also promote the growth of new leaves, bud germination and accelerate the explosion of pots.
