In all grape-growing countries, grapes are produced for different purposes, mainly for fresh food, wine and raisins. For example, China is a big producer of table grapes, and the main variety is Kyoho grape. While France, Germany, Spain, Argentina and other wine-producing countries, the cultivation of wine grapes are mainly. In areas where the climate is dry and suitable for making raisins, such as Turkey and Iran, a large proportion of the grapes produced in these countries are used to make raisins.

From the chart of the planting proportion of major grape varieties in various countries, we can see that most countries are dominated by several kinds of grapes, such as Airen and Tempranillo, accounting for 43% of Spain's grape acreage, while Jufeng accounts for 44% of China's grape acreage. Italy is the country with the richest variety, with the largest acreage, Sangiovese, accounting for only 8% of the total acreage. A large number of other native varieties are distributed in different parts of the country, which is one of the reasons why the country's wines are so complex.

According to the OIV annual report, there are more than 1000 grape varieties (including table grapes and wine grapes) in the world. However, the common 33 grapes account for 50 per cent of global grape cultivation, and the top 13 grapes account for about 1/3 of global grape cultivation.

The most cultivated grape in the world is Jufeng grape, which is mainly used for fresh food, with a planting area of 365000 hectares. The world's most popular wine grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, is not to be underestimated, reaching 340000 hectares, accounting for 5 per cent of the world's acreage. Some of the "international varieties" we often talk about, such as Merlot and Chardonnay, are widely distributed in major wine-producing countries with considerable acreage. (text / Zoe)
