Do you like turkey? Then you know what kind of food turkey is and what the current breeding situation is like. Let's take a look. It is said that turkeys were introduced in the Dutch colonial period and have been raised for more than a hundred years.

In the past, the sideline form of raising several black-feathered turkeys in the farm backyard has now formed a professional breeding model. At present, the annual output of turkeys in Taiwan is about 200000, and there are about 80 turkey livestock farms in the country, of which 60 are white-feathered turkey farms specializing in turkey meat rice, accounting for 9798% of the total output. Although the market demand for larger imported turkey breeds has gradually increased in recent years, the number of turkey slaughtered in China has decreased, but under the guidance of the Council of Agriculture and the efforts of this Association and the Republic of China Turkey raising Association, through various promotional activities, actively open up domestic turkey channels, so the overall output value has gradually increased to a scale of NT $600 million.

At present, turkey breeds in China can be divided into white feathers and black feathers, of which white feathers account for the majority, and the common commercial breeds are Hybrid, Nicholas and Bout (B.U.T. British United Turkey). The listed weight of male turkey is about 27 kg, and that of female turkey is about 17 kg. There are fewer black-feathered turkeys, and some farmers use the original native species (smaller size of black feathers) to cross with white-feathered turkeys. The listed weight of male turkeys is about 10 kilograms and that of female turkeys is 6 kilograms. In the pursuit of turkey, people still have demand, and the profit is relatively large.

Turkeys are hatched mainly from turkey eggs imported from the United States, and pass isolation and quarantine to ensure the quality of turkeys before they are sent to livestock farms; turkey houses must pay attention to biosafety and ventilation, and spray or other cooling facilities must be installed when the temperature is too high; turkeys must be picked and fed more, and the floor should be covered with padding materials such as rice husks, chaff or sawdust, which should be changed from time to time and should not be too wet. In addition, as the domestic market likes larger turkeys, compared with the 3-4 months abroad, turkeys are kept for as long as 5 months, so turkey farmers must devote more painstaking efforts to take care of them. Compared with the native chicken that is slaughtered after a hundred days, the meat is strong and chewy, and it is sweeter.

Because most small families in China are not familiar with turkey cooking methods, and there are no large cooking tools, fresh turkey is rarely seen in traditional markets or supermarkets, so after turkey is slaughtered, it is often sent directly to the shops where turkey meat is cooked. Therefore, the turkey rice that consumers feast on at noon may be fresh meat slaughtered in the morning!
